Parents as Teachers sensory play

Parents as Teachers came to our house yesterday, bringing a giant rubbermaid tub of tiny plastic beads. Also in the box (of tiny sensory beads) were various toys: snakes, bugs, balls, dogs, ducks, horses, a variety of funnels and shovels, etc.

Sydney got to play in the tub with "our teacher friend".

Mommy's lesson learned: Next time they bring this activity for playtime, despite their plastic tablecloth to help contain them, opt to play in the dining room instead of on the living room's shag area rug because they weren't the easiest to get out of the carpet and we'll have a new baby soon.

We had also discussed a developmental email update that I had just received that talked about JUMPING. This is a milestone for kids to learn to jump with both feet. Sydney demonstrated it VERY WELL as soon as we started talking about it. He had great fun JUMPING with our teacher friend's assistance - off of the rubbermaid tub. (I think he was sad when it was time for her to go to someone else's house because they had fun.) He had also enjoyed reading some books with her.

Her observation is that Sydney is VERY EAGER to please and learn.

We talked about his growing list of vocabulary and the fact that he'll eventually NEED to communicate words better. As parents, we know that "betta-butta" is blueberry, belly button, bubble bath or peanut butter - depending upon context or scenario, but he will eventually TRY to communicate the words better for other people simply because he will WANT to communicate with them.

Interesting stuff... learning about kids and their developmental progress.

Sydney helps read and sing Twinkle Twinkle

Library book: That's Papa's Way
We got new books from the library this week. One of them is called "That's Papa's Way" and it is a book about a kid who goes fishing with Papa. Yesterday, at bedtime, Sydney announced "Fffffsh (fish) Papa Way". (Previously, he hasn't added too many words together - other than "more betta-butta (blueberries) please.") Throughout the book, they say "that's papa's way" and Sydney often repeats "papa way" while I read it to him.

Opposites: loves whisper/shout!
We also have a library book on opposites. Tonight, he had me read it to him FIVE TIMES!!! He especially likes the page that has WHISPER and SHOUT. He gets excited every time I get to that page and he starts laughing when I read SHOUT in a louder tone of voice. By the time we read it 3 times, he started to yell "SHOUT!" at just the right time. (I thought it was kind of funny! He was especially proud.)

Baby's First Words (book)
One of his board books, that we own and haven't looked at in a while, is on Baby's First Words. We read one day last week and I was SUPER IMPRESSED that I could open to a page and ask Sydney "What's this?" He is able to tell me/us almost every page in the book. (He does, however, get confused on the page for BOOK because it shows a 2-pg spread from a book that we own so, instead of saying BOOK, he says LION because it shows the book open to the LION page.) He is happy to announce the other pages, like: hat, sock, shoe, coat, face, hand, feet, bib, apple, milk, bowl, and ball (to name a few off the top of my head).

Twinkle, Twinkle
A week or so ago, when I went to sing Twinkle, Twinkle to Sydney, I suggested that Daddy help us sing our nightly bedtime lullaby. So, when I would pause, Daddy would chime in with the last word of each line.

Tonight, at bedtime, I asked Sydney if he wanted to help Mommy sing and he nodded yes.

He sang: STAR, ARE, HIGH, and a word that should have been SKY, but sounded nothing like it really. (I was pretty proud of him!)

Happy 22-month Birthday Little One

Sydney is 22 months old today!

Weighs around 25 pounds, fully clothed.
Still waiting for 2-year molars to appear.

Has had a recent WORD EXPLOSION this past month! He's an AWESOME COMMUNICATOR, despite having a limited vocabulary, and is VERY EXPRESSIVE. He is also extremely compassionate (and often SILLY).

He LOVES to rest his head on mommy's belly/belly button.

His new favorite things:
• HOUSE - building a house/structure for animals, cars or Sesame Street characters. Newest phase is asking for a DOOR, too.
• OEOEI - is Sydney's version of EIEIO, or his request to get out alphabet blocks or Sesame Street foam puzzle pieces. Earlier today, he was singing to the tune of ABC with the handful of letters that he knows.
• LETTERS - He can identify A, E, I, O, B, S, M, P, R. While we are stopped at stoplights, he is excited to look out the window and yell out any letters that he knows on signs. He also does it on boxes at the store or commercials on TV. He gets SO EXCITED that he knows some letters!
• HIDE! (Although, he isn't patient enough to stay covered under the sheet/blanket... he peeks early... or will come find YOU before you have the chance to find him!)

He LOVES to watch television:
PBS Sesame Street, PBS Sid the Science Kid and PBS Between the Lions

34 week appointment

This morning, we started our day at the doctor's office for my 34 week check-up.

My blood pressure was great. My weight gain was respectable (x+32). No protein in my urine. Baby's heart rate was perfect. Again, my uterus measures SMALL.

We've got doctor's ON CALL dates marked on our calendar for late April and early May - in hopes that Baby Silas will cooperate with doctor's on-call schedule so that Mike will have an opportunity to "CATCH" both of his children as they enter into this world. (We've been forewarned that not all of her colleagues would be receptive to the idea of letting DAD "catch" so, we keep HOPING that our doctor will be on-call when the magic happens!)

Because of my uterus measuring small... AGAIN/still... she has ordered us to repeat an ultrasound at our next appointment on Wednesday, April 13th to guarantee that Baby Silas is growing properly and that there are enough fluids inside. Chances are, I am still carrying a large baby in a small uterus - which is what we learned earlier this month and at our 35wk appointment with Sydney's pregnancy; although, we just want to make sure that Baby Silas is doing well in there. Doctor felt badly ordering a repeat ultrasound, in case it adds financial burden to us, but we assured her that we agree with the statement "it is best to check - just to be sure". (I'm sure that since she is liable for my care, it is important to keep an eye on it instead of assuming that everything is fine, despite measuring small.)

We look forward to seeing Baby Silas again (at the ultrasound) in a few weeks. (Mike reminds me that WE WANT HIM TO STAY INSIDE FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE HE IS SAFEST/HEALTHIEST IN THERE.) Doctor hopes that Baby will stay inside until 36, 37 or 38 weeks - when considered "term" and most ready to greet the world.

In the event that NATURE does not come first, doctor has proposed a scenario where we can "make a reservation at the spa" to make things happen before she goes out of town. (Originally, she was going to be ON CALL on the weekend that we are due, which happens to be Mike's weekend off, but has since taken vacation time to attend her cousin's wedding on a cruise ship in a tropical environment.)  The "eviction notice" has been posted for 39 weeks. She has suggested that we go ahead and cancel our 40wk OB appointment that had been scheduled with a different OB/GYN because she states "you won't be needing that one."

Today, I made my phone call to the insurance company for pre-certification and delivery guidelines, as well as confirming that we can deliver at the hospital of our choice. (I have up to 3 days for vaginal delivery and 5 days for c-section; although, I can't fathom the thought of being away from home for that long in either scenario.)

I still need to fill out my pre-registration papers for the hospital, as well as my "birth plan".

I also just got the pregnancy email update - reminding me to pack my bags for the hospital.

Now, time will tell... to see WHEN Baby Silas would like to make his grand entrance into this world. Does he want to be an APRIL shower or a MAY flower?

WI weekend, Rachel's baby shower, 34wk belly

We enjoyed a weekend in WI - visiting with family.

Friday afternoon, I picked up my maternity compression stockings from the pharmacy that were special ordered for me. ($84+ tax!!!! OUCH!!!)

Friday night, we enjoyed a fish fry (all-you-can-eat perch) at our favorite local establishment with Grandma & Grandpa Olson AND Great-Grandma Mahoney. Like usual, it was DELICIOUS!

Saturday morning, we went to visit best friend Kerri, husband Greg and their 2 adopted dogs. (Happy Birthday Kerri!)

Saturday afternoon, the boys stayed home (with Grandpa Olson) while the girls and Auntie Karin went to a baby shower for cousin Rachel. (We sure hope Rachel & Jeremy have a girl... because they got A LOT of pink stuff!!!!) It was a beautiful shower.

You're looking at a 33wk belly and a 34wk belly pic:
Rachel's baby GIRL is due May 14th. Silas Jacob is due May 7th.

This morning, we enjoyed breakfast with Auntie Karin, who spent the night.... AND we all got to visit with Uncle Mike at his apartment in Florida. (Sure is nice to have modern technology, like webcams and internet!)

We also got to go through my grandmother's house today because the realtor was having an Open House there and I happened to see the sign posted. That was nice to see what they've done to the place since it left our family's hands two owners ago. Ahhhh, the memories...

We also got our federal taxes done and filed over the weekend and are thankful that we're getting a refund back; Mike hopes that it is enough money to get my veins fixed this year.

When we got home this evening, Sydney had just woken up. He started to cry as Mike carried him into the house. We asked him "What's the matter?"

"Papa. Nana. Woof." he replied between the tears.

He was sad that we were home, as he OBVIOUSLY had fun at Grandma & Grandpa's house this weekend; we'll have to visit with them on Skype. (Sorry we never got around to making birthday cake and singing to you, Dad/Papa. We'll have to sing to you in a couple of days! Look for a blue envelope at your house... I left your birthday card there.)

Thanks for a great weekend! It was SO NICE to see you, family!

Wore the new maternity compression stockings on Saturday and was saddened to report that I don't think they are going to work. Thankfully, the box indicates a satisfaction guarantee. I will have to call about returning or exchanging them. When they were ordered, it was determined to order a LARGE, hoping to get enough length for my 33" inseam, but my measurements were all for a MEDIUM. By ordering the larger size, the compression does not feel tight enough in my left leg to keep the swelling down. So, we'll have to see...

Meds and Support for Mommy

On Monday, when we went in for our unscheduled OB/GYN appointment for the crazy contractions, the doctor took a swab culture to send in for testing. She had indicated that sometimes something so simple as bacterial growth or yeast infection can cause a disturbance in uterine contractions.

The doctor's office called today to report that there IS an overgrowth of bacteria, which is quite common in pregnancy due to hormonal and pH changes. They are treating me with 7 days worth of antibiotics to clear it up. (The same thing happened the last time I was pregnant, too. Both times now, a cultured swab came back with growth - despite me having NO IDEA that there was ANY PROBLEM whatsoever.)

I have also been drinking PLENTY of fluids since my appointment AND wearing my support hose. My painful contractions have nearly subsided and I am left with Braxton Hicks practice contractions throughout the day/night, but those seem to be slightly less frequent with the extra fluids, too.

We have now ordered Jobst Maternity Compression Stockings for me as well. (Those suckers are NOT cheap... just shy of $90.00!!!!) I am wondering, when they come in on Friday, if we will be able to submit them to insurance. It seems rather pricey for just 44 days remaining until due date, but my badly-veined-leg NEEDS the support! I should be able to wear them post-baby as well... they will just be roomier in the waist, right? Eventually, (post-baby) when my body is "back to normal," I hope to have the vein specialist assess my leg(s) to see about getting them "FIXED".

PROJECT LIFE_Weeks 1 thru 6

Perhaps you have noticed the box on the right side of my blog regarding PROJECT LIFE. I admired this project kit and FINALLY decided to participate in it - feeling extreme guilt for not having scrapbooked much of anything for the past few years now. I must admit that: I LOVE PROJECT LIFE!!! (If you want, you can check out the link for it at www.beckyhiggins.com)

I am trying to take more photographs and document SOMETHING to show for our lives. My blog (and Facebook) are useful to keep track of our goings-on-in-this-world, as well. It should be interesting to look back on this/these album(s) to see "Remember when we paid <$3.00/gallon for gasoline?" or to see the funny things that we were up to.

Here's a sneak peek at MY PROJECT LIFE 2011...

Doctor says OK, 33wk belly

Above: 33 week belly

Yesterday afternoon, I had been experiencing a series of painful contractions. I'm getting QUITE used to experiencing the Braxton Hicks "practice" contractions, but THESE actually downright hurt! While making dinner, I had a handful of them - lasting 15-20 seconds each - and happening every minute-or-two. Eventually, I took the hint and decided "Perhaps it is best to go sit down for a little while."

After a small break, I noticed that my uterus had calmed down for the most part and I returned to make dinner. While we ate, I had another handful of them. I questioned if I had been over-doing it. I questioned if I had drank enough liquids during the day.

After dinner, I had Grandpa Lowell entertain Sydney while I showered/shaved. (That was, by the way, DELIGHTFUL and the most relaxing time I have had in a while... normally, my shower curtain flies open and "BOO!" or "Hi, Mom!" bombard me with surprise, as well as a blast of cold air on multiple occassions. So, thank you - Grandpa Lowell - for that nice change of pace, as well as running the vacuum after dinner for me!)

I had NOT been wearing my support hose during the day and noticed that my ankle was pooling over in a fold by my sock and my left foot appeared slightly puffy; hmmmm, fluid retention and swelling... NOT SO GOOD!

MENTAL NOTE: wear support hose tomorrow, regardless of how much I plan to be on my feet.

I drank some fluids and continued to have contractions on & off throughout the evening, most of which were not painful. I did wake during the night for a couple of "good ones" however so, decided it was best to call the doctor this morning to mention the recent series of events.

They assured me that "it is probably nothing, but it is best to have you come in to check things out - just to be sure". Because Baby Silas is still moving around, despite the extra uterine activity, they didn't feel the need to do a FST (fetal stress test) unless it would make ME more comfortable. He's moving a lot less than the past 2 weeks, but he is most likely also running out of free space in there. (She's predicting that he's still moving a lot, but since I have been busy cleaning, etc - that I probably just haven't noticed his movement as much.) I was also informed that the recent full moon - being the closest to the Earth in 18 years time - had done some CRAZY THINGS over the weekend to women's bodies because Doctor was on-call and VERY BUSY! (That's funny!)

I have also noticed that Baby Silas has shifted positions so that the banging that I used to feel solely on my right can now be felt on my left and I have a hard protrusion (likely a butt or leg) near my belly button. (The indigestion that I had been suffering from the past 2 weeks has also subsided with the position change; now, I have just been having an occasional pinch of the sciatic nerve.)

My weight is good (down a little from last visit, despite my recent case of "the hungries" over the weekend). My blood pressure is good. My urine looked good, no protein. Fetal heart rate is good.

According to doctor, Baby Silas is head-down and there are no signs of softening, ripening or dilating. His head is not engaged low into my pelvis; it pushed away when she was doing her exam. She also took a swabbed culture to make sure that there isn't any infection in the area - which can sometimes cause overly active uterine contractions. I have my normally scheduled appointment one week from today.

She told me that I should drink plenty of fluids and perhaps I need to do a little less cleaning for a few days. Perhaps a 20-minute "Power Nap" is in order while Sydney sleeps...

Happy Birthday Grandma Carol

Happy Birthday (and Happy Spring) Grandma Carol!

Hope you enjoy(ed) your birthday!

Happiness Project inspires some closet cleaning

Within the past year, I have been reading Gretchen Reuben's "The Happiness Project" on and off, hoping - at some point - to finish it. Ever since I first picked it up, I have been TRULY ENJOYING IT and feel that it HAS made some impact upon my life, but I rarely find time to sit and read uninterrupted.

I recently finished reading "How to Talk so your kids will listen AND how to listen so your kids will talk" - which I had also been plugging away at for what seems like forever. Also in the works are: "What to Expect When Expecting", "What to Expect Toddler Years" AND "The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are".

Here is a peek of my New Year's Resolutions:

So, you see, I DO have GOOD INTENTIONS of finishing this (Happiness Project) book. Recently, this successful book was published in paperback and I see that it has been published in MANY different languages. (I am pleased for her that her book has become so successful - worldwide! AND I find it fascinating to see the cover variations throughout the world. HOW COOL IS THAT?!? Perhaps it is the former graphic designer in me that appreciates that part.)

Above images taken from the website: http://www.happiness-project.com

I had picked the book up within the past couple of days. Somewhere along the line, Sydney had lost my page. (He likes to look at the book because there is a bird... a blue bird... on the cover and his toddler mind is convinced that there will be exciting pictures inside; it is, however, an adult book that is filled with fascinating and inspiring words.) I flipped it open, midway through the book, and was inspired to re-read a section on cleaning out closets to help with happiness.

Yesterday, my closet cleaning reading inspired me to tackle the office closet. I was pregnant when we moved into this house and therefore, didn't fit into ANY of these clothes. By the time I was finally ABLE to fit into these clothes, I got pregnant again. BUT, in the 2+ years that we have lived here, I have come to this realization:

Closet cleaning, I am reading, is a multi-step program.

I went through it - ROUND 1 - looking for spare hangers. (Ha! No empties so, onto ROUND 2.)

ROUND 2 - I had a box set aside with a specific intention... clothes to give to my cousin, Kristen. I went through the closet, pulling out anything in a XS or S that I thought she would be able to wear. (She'll be graduating from college in May and will need some clothes for "the work world".)

My signature style happens to be a long-sleeved button down dress shirt, most often worn partially unbuttoned with a shirt underneath, in a rainbow of colors; BIG SIGH - unfortunately, for me, most of them are too small for my aging "motherly" body. (At this time, I am HOPING that I will be able to - someday - fit into size MEDIUM again so, I have temporarily held on to a few shirts.)

I have yet to move onto ROUND 3, but know good-and-well that there are PLENTY of clothes in that closet that I have NO INTENTION of ever wearing (or keeping) so, when time permits (and when childcare and lighting conditions are right to get into that dark unlit corner), I will proceed with the purging process.

My goal is: to make room in that closet for BABY BOY CLOTHES (they have no closet in the nursery), a set of paper rack storage drawers (that Sydney doesn't stay out of) and clothes, for me, that I actually intend to wear.

I was QUITE PLEASED to easily free up 50 plastic clothes hangers during my recent purging! I look forward to the opportunity to free up some more and will feel SO GOOD when I am done!

Once again, this book is bringing me happiness.

Uh-oh... fat lip reminder that boys get bumps

Late this afternoon, Sydney had decided that he wanted oatmeal for dinner (instead of waiting to eat with Mommy & Daddy) and, like normal, INSISTED upon making it himself!

Right after the microwave beeped, I went to get raisins out of the cabinet. Sydney had been standing on his chair digging in the silverware drawer. Suddenly, with my back turned, I hear a HUGE CRASH and immediate screaming. I turned to find Sydney laying on his back, against the back of his kitchen chair as the whole thing had tipped over backwards. (To be perfectly honest, I have NO IDEA how he managed to tip the entire chair over backwards.)

When he finally caught his breath and calmed down enough, he was able to point to his upper lip to indicate that he had bumped it. (On what, I REALLY don't know, but he did NOT drop the spoon that was in his hand so, I can only guess that it MAY have been his spoon that hit his lip.) It took him a few minutes to regain composure after his scare and fall. It took LESS time for his upper lip to swell.

Mike got home just moments after it had happened and got to see Mommy holding and comforting Sydney as the kitchen chair was still tipped over. Sydney pointed to his lip to tell Daddy that he had hurt it.

Sydney did think it was pretty cool when Daddy took him into the bathroom to look at his "big boy bump" in the mirror. He wasn't interesting in putting an ice pack on it; he was mostly concerned that he wanted to eat his oatmeal.

Twenty-one months into this journey, I am getting a little more comfortable with the simple fact that: BOYS GET BUMPS!

• • • • •

Mike got to witness Sydney's head-first flip (over the siderail) into Baby Silas' crib tonight. YES, a crib tent will definitely be needed to ensure the safety of Baby Silas.

BOYS, I tell you...

Rotavirus suspected in house, Sydney sick now too

On and off, all week long, we've had a mixture of good days and bad.

On Sunday, I had been chilled and achey, but after a nap and some Tylenol, felt quite a bit better. My stomach had felt "off" much of the day, but I didn't know if it was from questionably old leftovers or my prenatal vitamin. (I, thankfully, felt fine on Monday - other than a cold sore and my normal pregnancy-related indigestion.)

Mike had thrown up at work on Monday and Tuesday and had come down with a fever, chills and aches. Tuesday through Friday, he's been focusing on caring for his "other end" and had stopped vomiting. He has had almost NO appetite for much of the week. Sydney and I appeared to remain healthy throughout this spell; although, we did notice that we were all starting to have some rotten smelling gas.

Some nights Sydney slept fine, while other nights, he woke up a lot. Some days, he's been especially snuggly and others, he is full of his normal spunk and charm. One day, he'd have an odd diaper or two and the next, he's be fine. Some meals, he would devour EVERYTHING on his plate and the next few meals, he would eat almost nothing.

This morning when he woke, Sydney was especially thirsty. (He's normally signing EAT before I pick him up out of his crib, but he did NOT do that today.) When we went downstairs, he asked for some "betta-butta" which in today's context means blueberries. We're out of them so, grapes were substituted for the request. He also wanted some of Mike's homemade banana bread. Knowing his typical morning requests, I got him some juice as well. He ate a few bites of food and quickly requested to drink MILK instead. (Hmmmm, odd... but no warning bells YET.)

Soon, he pushed his plate away, signed ALL DONE and asked to watch "ah-lee-I-on"  which is his version of "LION"... meaning that he is requesting to watch the PBS show - Between the Lions. He sat briefly in the recliner watching LIONS while I made myself a cup of chai tea and soon sat on the couch. He came over and laid down on his belly next to me so, I rubbed his back. (Hmmmm, also odd... but STILL no warning bells; silly me!)

Just a few minutes into the show, he sat up and snuggled against me. All of a sudden, he reached for my hand and started to throw up in it. (It IS normal for him to sometimes spit food into the palm of my hand so, at first, I wasn't shocked.) But it overflowed my hand so, I attempted to catch it in BOTH HANDS - hoping to contain it. Turns out, after multiple waves of it, I had puke all over my belly, arms, both hands and lap and wondered WHAT DO I DO NOW? (He's NEVER, thankfully, thrown up - like this - before.)

I instructed Sydney not to touch ANYTHING, but he seemed confused by my request. (I really didn't want it all over the couch and rug, too.) I was lucky enough to be wearing a button down fleece pajama shirt (phew, unbuttoned at least) over top of my short-sleeved pajama shirt so, I reached (carefully) to pull it off so that I could use it to contain the puke. Feeling like a turtle stuck on its back, I gained my composure and balance in order to stand up with Sydney and the mess of soaking wet pajamas plastered to my fat, pregnant body. The smell was HORRIBLE! We moved quickly to the kitchen where we stripped off nearly all of our clothes. (I left on my short-sleeved shirt because I didn't think it was best for the neighbors to witness the pregnant woman walking naked past the large picture window, knowing good and well that the teenage son is on spring break and spends A LOT of time in that nearby room playing video games.)

I started running some bath water and Sydney started to cry. I assured him that Mommy was going to come into the tub, too. Soon, he forgot that he didn't want to be there and I had to coax him to share some of the space in the tub so that I could come in to wash off, too. (He was all sprawled out in the tub, as if he was swimming.)

I washed and rinsed off as quickly as I could, dried myself and grabbed some fresh clothes to throw on. Sydney was content playing in the tub so, after I dressed, I ran downstairs to briefly assess the damage. There were a few small piles of partially digested grape skins laying in various spots on the dining room floor, as well as a trail of liquid drips; all-together, not bad at all considering what it COULD have been. I grabbed a fresh diaper for Sydney and ran back upstairs to find him still playing in the tub.

Once he finally agreed to come out of the tub, he was dried off and diapered. Within a few minutes though, he got a scared look on his face and started signing POOP. I assured him "It's OK." He ran to me as I sat on the floor; he exposed my belly, announced "betta-butta" and gently placed his cheek on my belly for comfort. (The belly, I tell you, has some magical powers that can make him feel instantly better!) It took some convincing, but I finally was able to get him out of his poopy diaper and into a fresh one. A few short minutes later, we were going through deja vu, but this time, he needed Elmo to join us for the group (fetal position) hug on the floor while he feared the next round of poop explosion. Afterwards, he was content to just stay there - curled in a ball between my legs with his cheek on my belly.

I talked to Mike and thanked him for sharing 1) his homemade banana bread and 2) his sickness. I told him about our exciting morning. He insisted that I call the doctor's office since we suspected that Sydney had been a little bit under the weather on & off - all week. They later informed me that there is a nasty G.I. stomach bug going around - a rotavirus - which sounded like what we had in our house this past week. I was warned that it can dehydrate toddlers quickly so that I should push fluids - with an emphasis on Gatorade, Powerade or Pedialyte. The nurse informed me that Sydney would most likely NOT want to eat anything at all and THAT IS OK as long as he's taking in fluids. IF, by chance, he did want to eat - keep it bland... cheerios, crackers, toast. Also, treat fever/aches/etc with Tylenol because it is gentler on the stomach.

Sydney wanted to watch tv, snuggle and read books all morning. (I did make some time to spray Lysol disinfecting spray on doorknobs, light switches, drawer/door pulls, remote controls, and telephones.) Mid-to-late-morning, Sydney asked for some cheerios so, we munched them dry while watching tv. Mike worked until noon and took over the tv-watching, snuggling and book reading duties so that I could go for a haircut and to the store. While I was gone, they enjoyed a one hour nap together.

We enjoyed some 50°F+ temps after carrying in the groceries and Sydney insisted that we draw with chalk in the driveway for a few minutes. The rest of the afternoon was hit-or-miss with playtime vs. snuggle time. When he saw mommy sit down to eat some dinner, he requested something to eat as well. He had a few bites of turkey lunchmeat and a couple of grapes before pushing away his plate to color with crayons instead.

He played a round of bedtime "HIDE" before Mike headed off to bed and we headed to the nursery to continue with bedtime routine.

I also discovered that Sydney's climbing earned him a free - headfirst - trip into Silas' crib tonight after he was climbing the one side and figured out that leaning would pull him in on his face. Unfortunately, it did NOT scare him... in fact, he - of course - found it FUN... so, looks like we will NEED the crib tent to keep Silas safe in his own bed. I reminded Sydney that "that bed is for the baby" but he pointed to himself, indicating that HE is mommy's baby. (I guess it doesn't help that I DO, in fact, still think of him as MY BABY.)

What a day! Hopefully, the illness in our household will pass quickly (and hopefully, I will remain healthy).

Parents as Teachers meeting

Ever since Mike's boss's wife told me about the (free) Parents as Teachers program, probably 10 months ago, we have been on a waiting list for it. Last week, they called to inform us that we've moved up the list and that they wanted to come meet us - if we're still interested.

This morning, our representative and her shadowing college student came to our house. Sydney played shy for less than 12 seconds, I'd say. And when they showed him a baggie of crayons and asked him if he likes to color, he had made some INSTANT FRIENDS. They were not, however, expecting him to hand them crayons and for him to ask them to write random letters of the alphabet or draw fish for him. (At least I had warned them that he'll call you on it if you forget to draw an eye for the fish or if you forget to draw scales on it's back.) They probably weren't expecting him to slide so many crayons into the neck of his onesie - for safe-keeping - either.

Today was mostly a meet-and-greet to do paperwork. They will come to our house twice a month to work with us hands-on. (And when Silas is born, they will work with HIM, too. We had added him to the waiting list as soon as we found out we were expecting!)

Through observation, they quickly determined that Sydney SHOULD fit the program very nicely as he is outgoing, eager to learn and eager to please. It should be interesting to see what kinds of activities they bring with them on their next visit in 2 weeks.

They had asked me how many words Sydney speaks. Off the top of my head, I guessed 50 - due to his recent word explosion the past few weeks. Mike assured me that he knows WAY MORE than 50... estimating between 50 and 100. Later in the day, I started to make a list of words - many of which are understood solely by us. I easily wrote 75 words down. Our little man is certainly coming around...

I woke this morning to find a note on the dry-erase board from Mike. Originally, I had a note that said PARENTS AS TEACHERS HERE WED AM so that I wouldn't forget the appointment.

Mike wrote: I give you a B+ because straight A's are for nerds.

(He was rating ME as a parent, I guess.)

Goofball.

Two Number 2's...

Aunt Sue called the other night to report that my cousin, Rachel, is working at the local daycare during spring break for extra spending money.

Rachel knew our name selection for Number 2 and had never heard the name Silas before that. (Honestly, before meeting Mike and seeing his SILAS license plates, I had never heard the name Silas before either.)

Rachel was SHOCKED to discover that there are not one, but TWO little boys named Silas at that daycare in small-town, WI. (One of them was spelled with a Y instead of an I.) That's crazy... what are the odds of that?

Babynames.com reports that SILAS, Latin for Man of the Forest, was most popular in 2009 - ranking #254 in baby name popularity. So, perhaps, this name - SILAS - won't be nearly as unique as we had intended, but it DOES have history on our family tree and THAT is what is important to us.

We look forward to welcoming yet another SILAS into this world.

Number 2 Belly Pic for week 32

32 weeks pregnant...
only 56 days to go until our due date!

Naming Rights for Number 2 revealed

We're pretty sure that we've FINALLY decided upon a name for Number 2.

When someone at work questioned Mike about our baby name selection this week, Mike shared the name. The guy said "Oh, so you're going with the S-theme?" (I teased Mike that if he was thinking quick enough, he should have told him that it starts with a silent P - as does the word psoriasis, but spelling is NOT Mike's forté; quick-wit, however, DOES tend to be a specialty of his.) Instead, Mike told his co-worker that both of our boys will have names that are off of our family trees, to which the guy replied "That's cool!"

Drum-roll please.....

PHOTO DETAIL: Silas

NAME SELECTION:
Silas Jacob

HISTORY: We did NOT want a name off of the 100 Most Popular List; we wanted something unique and with some meaning so, we're picking names with family history.

This way, both of our children (Sydney Michael and Silas Jacob) will share part of their father's name... MICHAEL SILAS... as well as names off of our family trees. (Sydney's name is same as his Grandpa Olson's middle name, great-grandpa's first name and great-great-grandpa's first name.)

Silas is Mike's middle name (that comes off of Mike's family tree - Mike's paternal great- grandfather's name.) Jacob, in the top 5 for popularity, is from Mike's maternal family tree and honors of our Dubuque heritage. (Silas' great-great-great grandfather, a 4th Street Elevator Board of Directors member, was named Jacob Frederick Ris and his son... Silas's great-great grandfather was named John Jacob; Jacob being a common name for both of them.)

Hence, our name selection for NUMBER 2: Silas Jacob!

A photo I found on the internet - of the 4th St elevator plaque that currently hangs on the building at the top of the Fenelon Place Elevator in Dubuque, IA. (NOTE: JF RIS)

We're in the process of teaching Sydney how to say SILAS. Normally, he just calls him BABY.... or BELLY BUTTON. (Betta-butta)

Today, while shopping with Grandma Olson, we purchased a brand new outfit for Silas to wear home from the hospital. (It has puppies on it; Sydney LOVED the outfit for his baby brother!) We bought it in both newborn size and 0-3 month size, figuring that Grandma Olson will be able to wash the appropriate size (while I enjoy my spa-like stay in the hospital) and bring it to the hospital for our discharge - depending upon how big the little man is when he is born.

Only 56 days until his due date...

I was also pretty excited that we picked up matching shirts for the boys... one saying BIG BROTHER and the other saying LITTLE BROTHER. I'm anxious to see them in their shirts together; it will be SO STINKING CUTE!!!

Ultrasound at 31wk4d for Number 2

Despite a small uterus , today's ultrasound showed that Number 2 is growing very well and appears to be quite healthy. So, despite the small uterus, I hide my BIG BABIES well... Number 2 is measuring almost 2 weeks large for his age and weighs in at 4# 12 oz.

What To Expect reports that at 31 weeks, baby will be packing on another 3-5# before delivery and that at 32 weeks, baby should weigh "almost 4 pounds".

They got good views of Number 2 and claimed that he was photogenic. They were able to confirm a nasal bone and rule out cleft lip because they got a good view of his face. During much of the ultrasound, he had 2 hands and a foot near his face. They confirmed that it looks like he has hair on his head already.

In the 3D photo, the raised long lumps on his forehead are fingers, as his hand was resting there. They were having a hard time getting a good image of his nose because it was SMASHED UP against by belly, as if he had it pressed on a window. (These are the better of the 3D images captured today.)

Number 2's stats:
Heart rate 136
4 pounds,  12 ounces = mid-80th percentile
Femur measurements = just under 50th percentile
All other measurements taken, including head size and abdomen size = low-to-mid 90th percentile
BOY PARTS CONFIRMED with one of his testes already descended into position.
Heart looks normal.
Urinary system appears to be in working order.

OVERALL: Number 2 measures almost 2 weeks ahead of schedule for his gestational age.

Mommy's stats:
x+29.4 pounds
110/60 blood pressure
Uterus measures 28-29cm; since I am days away from 32 full weeks, in theory, it SHOULD measure close to 32cm at this time.
59 days to go until May 7th due date.

Counting down... 60 days until Number 2!

Yesterday, I talked to Annie (the wife of Mike's boss) who is a labor & delivery nurse at our hospital. I hadn't thought of it this way YET, but she assured me that my stay at the hospital will feel spa-like since I won't, for once, have to worry about taking care of anyone else and will have my meals brought to me. (I also find that it is VERY NICE that the nursing staff comes to your room and reminds you "it is time to feed your baby now" and if I opt to have Number 2 in the nursery so that I can get a little sleep, they will bring him to me when he needs me. NICE.)

I will also be able to go to the bathroom BY MYSELF - without a potty chair crammed next to the toilet and without someone's hand/arm resting on my leg. (Don't get me wrong, it IS VERY SWEET, but other than my middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom, I don't typically get to GO alone; even then, a lot of times, one of the cats will join me.) Thankfully, Sydney has stopped his toilet paper fetish and no longer tries to wipe my butt cheek or hip while I sit on the toilet.

AND... I will be able to soak in a bathtub - BY MYSELF - without the fear of someone pooping in the tub.

Ah, yes.... thank you Annie.... it sounds LOVELY!

Right now, Number 2 could be up to 19" long from head-to-toe and SHOULD weigh close to 4#, packing on more fat every day. (Funny because they say that FAT helps regulate body temperature; therefore, I, myself, must be well-regulated, right?)

Tomorrow's ultrasound SHOULD give us a better idea how long Number 2 REALLY IS and how much he weighs. (We'll be sure to post an update and pics, if possible.) I'm sure that after having the opportunity to see Number 2 in 3D tomorrow, I will be all-the-more-anxious to meet the little man and these last 60 days may suddenly slow down.

It certainly is AMAZING (and a little bit scary) how quickly our ticker countdown is moving: SIXTY DAYS LEFT!!! (And how many more things I would like to get done - around the house - before his arrival.)

A Letter (or bunch of them) from Sydney

Sydney and Mommy sat at the table with crayons and paper. (Sydney now says PAPER as one of his new(er) words.) Oftentimes, he hands Mommy a crayon and motions for her to draw a picture (normally a fish or a baloon, but NOW he requests BIRDS, too... another new word this week) or specifies a letter.

Mommy can write the following letters - one at a time - for Sydney to identify: O, E, I, S, M, R and sometimes A.  (He identifies them correctly much of the time.)

Mommy asked Sydney "Now what should Mommy write?"

He dictated the following sequence of letters for Mommy to write so, in theory, THIS is a letter (or bunch of letters) from Sydney:

Number 2 Belly Pics for weeks 30 and 31

30 week belly:

31 week belly:

31 week belly, when seated:

Um, oatmeal... BATH!

This morning, we had oatmeal for breakfast. On most days, Sydney eats almost an entire serving of oatmeal - with brown sugar and raisins added. Today, was NOT one of those days. For some reason, he was MUCH more interested in playing with his oatmeal.

It started out that he dropped a little onto the table and then, used his hand to smear it around.

Once his hands were dirty, he started to rub his forearm. It must have been an unique sensation for him because he seemed to be VERY INTERESTED in it. Mike reminded me that oatmeal is good for the skin, that's why they make oatmeal baths.

From there, he decided to use his spoon to apply more oatmeal to his (already quite slippery) arm.

Ah, yes - and of course - what better way to finish things off than with a little (err, I mean... A LOT) of oatmeal in your hair?!? AGAIN, Mike reminds me that oatmeal is good for the skin.
I kind of wanted to puke when I took a good look at his hair. It was SO GROSS, but he didn't seem to mind. Needless to say, I left the table and went upstairs to start running some bath water. Sydney seemed rather concerned when we set him into the tub with his jammies and diaper still on, but (let's face it) he was an ABSOLUTE MESS! By the time I was done undressing him, I, too was covered in oatmeal from his slimy hands and, of course, a generous hug from my 21-month old son.

Earlier in the week, he did a similar thing with his lunch - attempting to balance pieces of food on the top of his head. He went on to smear peanut butter in his hair and earned himself a bath. Perhaps, he is doing these acts on purpose now - since he is excited that we bought BUBBLE BATH?!? Or, perhaps it is "just a phase that comes with the age"?

WHAT A MESS!

Nursery for TWO (photos)

Last weekend, we installed new carpeting in the nursery and the master bedroom. (It was DELIGHTFUL to step onto new carpet when I woke on Sunday morning.)

Here, you can see the difference between the ratty old hallway carpet and the plush, new nursery carpet as Mike starts to assemble the second crib for the nursery. (We'll eventually have the hallway done, too and the threshold between the two will be better.) It makes an AMAZING DIFFERENCE!

Here is a view from the hallway/door... 2 cribs make the room appear MUCH SMALLER and slightly off-balance. Thankfully, for us, we have TWO CRIBS! (When one of the slats FELL OUT of Sydney's original crib, the company sent us an entire new crib. We assembled our new crib and Mike was later able to Gorilla Glue the fallen slat into place on the old crib. Lucky for us... they convert from a crib, to a toddler bed and then, to a full-sized bed with head & footboard.)

Seems SO REAL seeing two cribs

This morning, Mike and handy assistant Sydney assembled the second crib in the nursery.

(We're missing one part so, we HOPE that Mike can find "a widget replacement" at the hardware store.) When he was done, he placed a piece of cardboard in the bed of it and laid a comforter inside - making it look like a bed.

I felt a slight wave of anxiety seeing TWO CRIBS in the room; that visual makes it feel SO CLOSE and SO REAL! Soon, there will be TWO OF THEM calling us momma and dadda. (OK, I realize that Number 2 isn't going to come out talking, but still... you get the idea.)

We've got our crib mattress picked out and are waiting for a sale.

Next Wednesday, I am SUPER EXCITED to get a Sneak Peek inside my belly at our ultrasound. Chances are, despite my uterus measuring small on a regular basis, we will discover that I hide it well - just like what happened with Sydney. It gives us the opportunity to make sure that he's developing well and perhaps to even see his little face. (Last time, he looked like a bony, little chicken, but he's been packing on the pounds now!)

Number 2 should be around 3 pounds already and 18" long. He's VERY ACTIVE inside my belly. I'm convinced that he's excited to meet his big brother because I think they can sense each other; Sydney exposes my belly and rubs it (or lays his cheek on it) ALL THE TIME! And Number 2 tends to move around a lot more when he can hear Sydney.

So far, Sydney seems pretty excited that BABY has a bed JUST LIKE HIS!

I hope they will be great friends!
