Racing the clock

Mike and I put the kiddos to bed and watched one-and-a-half movies together, shared popcorn (and nachos) and then, decided to turn off the tv. I glanced at the clock and had at least 30 minutes to spare...

Walgreens had a special promo going until midnight...
25 FREE 4x6 Prints

I scurried to look through the photos we had taken from December 18th through the end of the year. (Although, the past 2 days still need to be downloaded yet.) Uploaded to Walgreens...

At the very last second, I placed my order for 26 prints.
My total balance (with tax) was 21 cents!

I didn't mean to end 2011 in a mad rush, but I really DID want to take advantage of this great deal and owed it to my Project Life album to go out full-forces. (I'll have a little more work to finish out 2011, but I felt really, really good about the album! I LOVE IT!!! AND... I look forward to taking LOTS of pictures in 2012 for my next edition of our Project Life!)

Really enjoyed 2011 and I'm looking forward to 2012!

*For the record, we watched "Our Idiot Brother" and half of "Bridesmaids". We seem to be enjoying Bridesmaids MUCH MORE than the first movie selection. (We agreed that we would have been VERY DISAPPOINTED if we had paid full price in a movie theatre, but for $1 from Redbox, it was a little better.) Ultimately, we enjoyed each other's company and THAT is what matters most.

TeeHee... Gift from Grandma Carol makes us giggle

TeeHee... giggle, giggle!

Grandma Carol sent Mike some sort of contraption for keeping bottles of soda... er, I mean POP (in Iowa, it's called pop)... from going flat. Our two year old has been VERY INTRIGUED with this so-called contraption ever since first laying eyes upon it.

This morning, Sydney squeezed the ball-part of it and realized that it made a windy noise.

"I'm gonna huff and puff and BLOW your house down!" he announced loud and proud.

I giggled.

He asked me to open it out of the package for him. I denied his request. He asked if I could get him his knife. Perplexed, I questioned him WHY he needed his knife. He wanted to cut it off of the packaging. I told him a knife would not be a good choice for that. "Prob'ly (sc)issors den. Dat'd be good idea."

"Sydney, we aren't going to open this. This is a gift for Daddy. Daddy gets to open it from the packaging. You'll have to wait until Daddy gets home from work."

Hours and hours later, I found it funny that Sydney brought it to Mike and asked him to open it (from the package) within a few short minutes of his arrival home again.

Sydney (again) announced "I'm gonna huff and puff and BLOW your house down!" Once Mike figured out what Sydney had said, Mike chuckled and I got a case of the giggles all over again. (He's REALLY an entertaining kid!)

Christmas 2011

In preparation for our Christmas celebration

We taught Sydney how to wrap presents; although, he likes to put tape onto the inside of the wrapping paper instead. "(L)ook mom. Dat (l)ooks pitty!"

I was horrified when I realized that we had EATEN every. single. Christmas cookie! Out of ALL of the cookies we had made, we had eaten every one. We also had finished off the bag of carrots, leaving NONE for the reindeer; thankfully, daddy stopped at the store on his way home from work and brought carrots for the reindeer.

I didn't think it was right to re-gift cookies from our neighbors so, Daddy and Sydney decided to bake some cookies JUST FOR SANTA and decided to use red and green christmas sprinkles so that Santa would know that the cookies were JUST FOR HIM!

Christmas Eve
I dressed Sydney in a t-shirt that my mom had found: Who needs Santa? I've got Grandpa. (She thought that both of his grandpa's would like it.) When I put it on Sydney, he asked what those words were so, I told him. Then, sincerely, he asked "Will (S)anta C(l)ause (l)ike dat (sh)irt?" I was touched that we are raising a little boy who considers the feelings of others.
Our Christmas Eve meal... Horseradish Crusted Beef Tenderloin, "Why I show up for Christmas Dinner" Lima Bean Casserole, Sweet Potato & Apple Crockpot Bake, and Garlic Crescent Rolls.
Our (mouth-watering) Horseradish Crusted Beef Tenderloin. Mike's new recipe - compliments of America's Test Kitchen tv show. YUM!!!! YES, we would make this again!

Baby's First Christmas - bib from Grandma Carol.

Nana Olson and Silas.

Silas shows off his new(est) skills... push-ups and standing!

We gave Papa Olson some books for Christmas - two of them were on making wooden toys.

We gave Sydney his own vacuum! Grandpa Lowell helped get it out of the box.

... and he LOVES IT! He uses it multiple times per day!

Sydney opens a small Caterpillar construction truck and "The Truck Book" from Mommy and Daddy. Whoa... fun!

Sydney had been "snooping" under the tree and was playing with a wrapped jewelry box. I informed him to put it back, but he quickly grabbed a different present, hugged it and started to run away. Once he hugged it, however, it started to talk "Hello, it is your furry blue pal Grover" and sing "If you're happy and you know it..." Sydney - with wide eyes - quickly threw down the toy and started to bounce and clap along as directed. He wondered WHAT was inside that wrapped present and decided to go hug more presents after mommy had taken that one away. Turns out, it was a microphone. Now, Sydney has a microphone - JUST LIKE Sid the Science Kid does on PBS! Cool!

Mommy and Daddy gave Silas his own trucks, too. (Of course, Big Brother Sydney appears to like this toy a lot, too!)

Sydney got new lego blocks... a farm set - complete with a farmer, tractor and farm animals. (Sydney has previously LOVED his lego - Dulplo - blocks.)

Sydney hand-selected carrots for the reindeer and cookies for Santa. He set it all on the table, near the tree, for Santa to see.

Christmas Day
Per Daddy's suggestion, Papa Lowell arrived early on Christmas Day morning. Laying in bed, I heard a car door and announced "I just heard a car door. I wonder if your dad is here?" Thirty seconds later, I heard our front door open. We had all been up LATE the night before so, Sydney was NOT awake yet. Grandpa Lowell was able to videotape our Christmas morning - complete with my bedhead. :)

Once Sydney woke, Sydney was interested in checking the stockings. We checked his, Daddy's and Mommy's. He was SUPER EXCITED to check baby's stocking, but we reminded him that we had to wait for baby to wake up. (It was kind of funny because the slightest squeak from Silas - Sydney announced "Dat baby wake now. (L)et's keck dat (s)tocking now!"

My parents ventured over for brunch with the rest of us. It was a lovely morning/day.

We must have all been on the NICE LIST this year. Santa brought at least one present for each of us.

The elves at the North Pole were busy wrapping beautiful presents for us.

Sydney helps all of us get the "stuff" out of our stockings and sweetly exclaims "Mommy's favorite!" when discovering a Reece's Peanut Butter TREE. He then offers to share it with mommy by suggesting "How 'bout I take a bite, you take a bite, I take a bite. How 'bout dat? Dat'd be a good idea."

When I confirmed that they ARE my favorite candy (next to the Reece's Peanut Butter EGGS at Easter, of course), Sydney quickly announced "Dese Nih-knee's favorite, too, mommy!"

Sydney helps mommy open her present from Santa.

Mommy got rain boots from Santa!

Daddy got an Iowa State blanket from Santa.

Sydney opens his first present from Santa.
Sydney's first gift from Santa... a shirt!
(L)ook! (L)ook! A cement mixer (sh)irt from (S)anta!
Sydney opened this big construction truck from Santa and went running to Papa Olson to quickly get it out of the box.
Sydney's BIG TRUCK from Santa!
Grandpa Lowell and Silas watch - with all smiles - as Sydney empties Silas' stocking for him.
Silas got a tow truck toy in his stocking from Santa.

Silas got a monkey ball from Santa.

Christmas Gifts
A Christmas Gift for Silas - from Grandma Carol. (He opened it Christmas Day because he was too tired to open all of his other presents on Christmas Eve.)
Silas plays with his toy from Grandma Carol.

Sydney opens his schoolbus from Grandma Carol.
Sydney fills his schoolbus with his construction worker, farm animals and Elmo. It is QUITE a busy tour bus in Sydney's world!

Uncle Mike and Aunt Karin sent Sydney a Cookie Monster PlayDoh toy. (He LOVES IT!!!)

And they sent Silas two books (on CD)...
Sydney and Grandpa Lowell help Silas open his gifts from Uncle Mike and Aunt Karin.

We used the self-timer on our camera to take a picture while we sat near the kitchen, listening to one of our new books (from Mike and Karin).

Christmas Day - eating popcorn for a snack and reading books together.

Post Christmas
Sydney helps Mike use a sponge to lick our Christmas card envelopes shut and helps to adhere stamps. "No, don't want it 'dere!" was a popular phrase. "Wan' it over he-yah 'nstead."

Where's Waldo... with Elmo

While Sydney and Daddy attended Sesame Street LIVE, Mommy assembled the new yard decoration that Daddy picked out and had it waiting in the yard when they returned after dark. Sydney LOVED IT!

Throughout the holiday season, Mike took pride in moving Elmo to various places in our yard. Every few days, it seemed, Elmo was on the move. Normally during an afternoon snack or dinner, Mike would excitedly exclaim "Where's Elmo? He moved again? That's crazy!"

Sydney thought it was pretty fun, too!

One cold winter morning, Sydney decided "(L)et's go outside. (L)et's go blow bubbles." He proudly showed Elmo his bubbles before quickly announcing "It's cold outside. (L)et's go bat in now, mommy!"

One night, we found Elmo peeking into our kitchen window.
Sydney pondered "How'd Elmo get up dere? Prob'ly (s)tep (s)tool. No, wait! Prob'ly (s)tep (s)tool not tall nuff. Elmo prob'ly use (l)adder to get out dere. Yeah, prob'ly (l)adder." (We were delighted with his thought process, logic and reasoning abilities.)

Elmo's most recent "field trip" was onto the ladder - peeking into our stairway window. Sydney thought this was pretty fun again and wondered how Elmo got onto the ladder.

He's since announced that "prob'ly daddy put Elmo on (l)adder." as well as "Daddy prob'ly put Elmo on roof by kicken window, too." (He's one smart kid!)

Daddy sure had fun playing WHERE'S ELMO though.

Ah, making fond childhood memories for our children...

Happy 31-month Birthday Little Boy

Sydney is 31 months old and he is a remarkable little boy!

He's known all capital letters of the alphabet since before he turned two years old. He can count to 20 and know that the numbers MEAN SOMETHING instead of just reciting them. He knows most colors. In fact, while we are driving, he pays close attention to stoplights, announcing "RED, Stop! G'EEN, Go!" He LOVES to sing songs, dance, read books and color. (Coloring with markers - or painting - are his favorite things, I think, and have been great rewards for a job well done with potty-training. He also enjoys playing with PlayDoh and his Duplo blocks A LOT!

He had been mostly potty-trained, having started himself in early September, and was mostly accident-free for months. Then, however, during the month of December, he started having accidents A LOT and started wetting during naps. (He had been able to stay dry during naps most of the time prior to this and often woke dry in the morning, but those days seem long gone lately.) We had gotten rather lax with his potty training chart, which we're thinking led to the string of accidents in December, but since getting that going again... drawing happy faces on the chart on the fridge... he seems to be doing far-better again. (For a while we were able to take him out in public without a diaper on and he was able to hold it successfully. Since the string of accidents - that seem more intentional, actually - we're normally putting a diaper on him to leave the house, but praise him for having success in public toilets.) He, for some reason, has found (last month) a liking for going potty in daddy's recliner and immediately announces "Uh-oh, Daddy going to be angry, but Nih-knee give Daddy hug and kiss and it be all bettah den!" that we should "get the carpet cleaner spray out now." (I used to think he was doing it JUST because he liked to look at the picture on the Great Value carpet cleaner - because there were toy trucks on it. We're thinking that he really likes the extra attention that it is earning him.)

He has gotten VERY GOOD at pretend play. He plays with his toys very well and has the cutest little (higher-pitched) PRETEND-PLAY VOICE.

His favorite shows on television are still Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid and Word World... all on PBS!

Sydney is an AWESOME HELPER (when he wants to be) and is a TERRIFIC BIG BROTHER! He looks kind of silly crawling on the floor (with Silas) since he has been walking on his own two feet since he was only 8.5 months old, but he seems to be having a great time chasing (and being chased by) Silas.

He's wearing 2 and 3T shirts and is still so skinny that he could likely get by with 12 month pants, except for them being capri-length on him. We're fans of elastic waist pants for him... 18 months fits well, but THOSE are starting to get short, too. At the beginning of the summer, he could easily clear the dining room windows (outside) when they were cranked open, but by the end of the summer, he felt the need to duck.

Sydney LOVES to use his step-stool and be a part of activities in the kitchen. He's known - for a year or so - where most things go when we unload the dishwasher. I predict that because he knows his way around the kitchen so well, that he will someday be an excellent cook - just like his daddy! (He really likes to make his own bowl of oatmeal in the morning, announcing "TWO MINUTES" and pointing to the microwave when he's ready for it to cook.)

He recently started to wipe off kisses from mommy and daddy, but Daddy has since taught him "Don't wipe it off... rub it in!" (It's really cute when he kisses our cheeks and rubs it in for us. Adorable!)

He's REALLY into cars, trucks, busses, airplanes, etc! (And he's somehow convinced himself that hot air balloons have LOTS Of WHEELS on the under side of the basket, somehow confusing those with a BIG RIG 18-wheeler, I think.)

We've started interviewing him lately... asking him his name, how old he is, where he lives, who's his brother/mommy/daddy. He's funny! He lives "at Nih-knee's house in 'buque, I-owa". Q: Where does daddy work? A: "at 'buque, I-owa, too!"

He wakes between 7 and 8am most days. He likes to watch Sesame Street from 9-10am, Sid the Science Kid from 10-10:30 and sometimes WORD WORLD from 10:30-11am. We eat lunch anywhere from 11am-1pm and naps start anywhere from noon-2pm. He normally naps for 2 hours (once he finally falls asleep). There are some days where he will talk and sing - alone in his room - for an hour before falling asleep! He LOVES a bedtime snack at night - 1) graham crackers and milk, 2) four apple slices and a half a piece of peanut butter toast or 3) a dish of applesauce. He's doing a pretty good job of brushing his teeth on his own at bedtime; being cooperative earns him a(n) (extra) bedtime story. We normally read THREE bedtime stories, but lose them one-by-one for being uncooperative (or naughty). We sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", hum it once and snuggle in the recliner for a few minutes. At bedtime, we talk about our day's activities, what is going on tomorrow and (my favorite) "What's the best part of your day today?" (He used to answer quickly, but this past month has reverted to his go-to answer of "I don't know!" and now, quickly turns the question around to mommy or daddy instead.) Bedtime - light's out - is normally between 7:45 and 8:30pm.

He's a pretty incredible kid! He makes us laugh A LOT and enriches our lives each and every day!

Drawing with the purpose to tell a story

Drawing with Purpose... to tell a story
by Sydney, almost 31 months old (12.22.11)

Narration, spoken by Sydney, captured by mommy:

This is a guy with a happy face.

And legs.

And socks... with happy faces on them.

Nice socks.

Happy socks!

Gingerbread man says HI Nih-knee

Sydney just pooped in his potty chair and proudly admired his work.

"_ooks _ike gingerbread man!"

Then, he immediately switched over to his PRETEND-PLAY voice and announced "Hi, Nih-knee!"

(I giggled; He's got a very healthy imagination.)

Tooth Number 3 for Silas

At 7.5 months old, Silas is the proud owner of his lower central incisors AND...

BUILDING A SNOWMAN by Sarah and Sydney

How to make a snowman... with a toddler

Below are a few pictures - documenting our process. Sydney is 2.5 years old and LOVES to make projects with mommy! (We learned today that he REALLY likes rubber cement, likely because of the paintbrush inside!)

Trace a can for a large circle template.

Use a marker to decorate the "stick" arms.

Decide where you want your buttons.

Glue on your buttons.

Rubber cement to hold the hat on his head.

Rubber cement a strip of colored paper onto the hat.

Pose for pictures - using a self-timer.

Admire your work.

The final product.

He's ready for his close-up.

Before & After

SUPPLIES:
Empty baby "PUFFS" bottle, black marker, kraft colored cardstock (arms), black cardstock (hat, mouth, eyes) white cardstock (whites of eyes), orange cardstock (carrot nose, color strip on hat), blue cardstock (buttons), scrap ribbon (scarf), scissors, pen/pencil, ordinary handheld hole punch, circle punch, rubber cement, cans from your pantry for circle template,

DIRECTIONS: Empty bottle of puffs. Color sides of lid with black magic marker; let dry. Trace lid onto black cardstock for top of hat; cut out. Raid your pantry... Trace a larger can for bottom circle of hat; cut out. Cut strip of black paper at desired size to make cylinder shape of hat; tape and/or glue. (I used a Pampered Chef biscuit cutter to help hold mine together while the glue dried.) Punch 2 large black circles for eyes, 2 small white circles for eyes, a handful of small black circles for a mouth and a triangle wedge for a nose. (Decorate with pen, if desired.) Freehand draw arms, cut out, trace edges with black marker and decorate to look like STICK ARMS. (We folded an edge over and taped it to the body, but you could probably cut a slit in the body of the snowman and slide it inside of that.) Adhere arms to snowman; we used tape. Tie ribbon scarf onto snowman where desired. Rubber cement paper pieces onto snowman (eyes, nose, mouth, buttons). Rubber cement large circle to lid top. Rubber cement color hat strip to hat cylinder. (Again, I used my Pampered Chef Biscuit cutter to hold it together while drying.) Tape cylinder to lid top from inside. (We stuffed our hat with Kleenex and paper towel and added a little rubber cement to the top of that so that the top of the hat had something to stick to.) Rubber cement top of hat in place. Then, marvel at how much fun you had with your toddler/child and how awesome your snowman is!
