Baby 2 at 25 and 26 weeks (belly pics)

Here's a peek at 25 weeks with a soccer ball-sized uterus:

Here's a peek at 26 weeks:

Here's a peek at 26 weeks, where Sydney was NOT super cooperative because he had just been busy signing the word POOP and was TRYING to push when Mommy picked him up to be in a photo. (I feel as if I am almost NEVER in any pictures so, thought it would be good to get myself in one here & there.)

Number Two's EARS and hearing are developing; we're told he can hear our conversations now. This week, his testicles are descending down from his abdominal cavity into his scrotum - taking 2-3 days to complete their journey to the desired location. My uterus is the size of a soccer ball, but by 27 weeks will be the size of a basketball.

My pregnancy email update, earlier today, indicated that I can expect swelling in my feet and legs, but not to worry because SOON, my belly will be SO BIG that I wont be able to SEE my feet. :) The update encouraged keeping my feet elevated, not sitting or standing for long periods of time and making sure that I drink plenty of fluids. (I have already had significant swelling in my left leg/ankle for a few months already - due to my bad varicose veins; hence, the recommendation to wear support hose daily.)

Number 2 remains QUITE ACTIVE. On the drive to Monticello the other day, I was being kicked by BOTH KIDS at once! Sydney was busy kicking the back of my seat and Number 2 was kicking my insides. It was kind of funny.

26 weeks, 2 days down... 96 more days to go until due date! The end of the second trimester is in sight! Starting at our next OB appointment, we will be undergoing a Glucose Test and then, will start coming in every 3 weeks for appointments. (Yep, that means we're getting closer....)

Story Time for bigger kids offers no toys

This morning, we headed to our local library for Toddler Time (a story time for 18-35 months). We haven't attended story times since summertime when Sydney attended the Mother Goose session that went up to 18 months so, we weren't sure what to expect at this older kid session.

There was a large turn-out; apparently, this IS the place to go!

Sydney seemed VERY APPREHENSIVE at first. He was quite intent on people-watching. Part-way through, he seemed to have an AH-HA moment where he figured out that we were at a story time at the library and you could tell that he was scanning the (different location than last time) room for a bin of toys. Unfortunately, for the older kids, there IS no bin of toys; instead, they offer a selection of books for each child to look at with their adult.

Sydney was baffled by this concept. BOOKS, really? What do I want a book for?

He brought Mike and I each a book. Then, he started taking books one-by-one over to the storytime lady, hoping that SHE would read more stories. She thanked him for each book, which only encouraged him to go get more. Soon, it was time for all of the kids to put their books away and we could socialize.

Talking? NO! Where are the toys? (You could read it on his furrowed brow.)

Soon, he grabbed us by the hand and pointed toward the door. He just remembered - there are some toys out in the kids lobby. While I selected a few books for us to take home and signed Sydney and I up for library cards, Mike and Sydney self-toured the kids area of the library. (Sydney explored the aisles of books, played with some toys and just wanted to be chased by Daddy.)

Soon, he sat himself at a kids table & chair set and signed that he wanted: TO EAT! (Obviously, he thought that there MUST be more to this whole library thing...) We soon bundled in our winter gear and headed home for lunch.

At naptime, he was surprised to see a new assortment of books in his bedroom. (Mommy picked books with SLEEP and BEDTIME in them; Tricky, tricky, Mommy!) He insisted upon his Mercer Meyer Little Monster stories FIRST before we could attempt to look at anything new; this collection of stories is his favorite bed/naptime ritual. Then, we read a (library) book called NAPTIME and another called KISSES FOR DADDY. It was nice (for both of us) to explore a few new books.

Sorry, little buddy... I guess you are TOO OLD to play with TOYS at the library. We'll TRY to make books fun!

Mike was asked by one of the mothers "Are you guys having another baby?"

He smirked and replied "No, she just drinks A LOT of beer."

She gently slapped his arm. (She had recognized Sydney and I from the breastfeeding support groups at Mercy Hospital and all 3 of us from the Breastfeeding Awareness Walk in August. Sydney is a memorable enough kid that she even remembered HIS NAME!)

When we got home, I questioned Mike: I thought you said that it looks OBVIOUS that it is a baby and not a beer belly. (He assured me that it does.) We figure: Being that you leave the hospital, after delivery, looking like you are still several months pregnant - perhaps, she was just inquiring if we just HAD a baby or if we are EXPECTING ONE.

Gosh, he sure does LOVE telling people how much beer I drink. :)

Swim Date at YMCA with Daddy

We attended the Saturday session because Mike works on Tuesday night this week. Mommy stayed poolside so that she could snap a few pictures with the new camera. The first ones were a little on the light side... because the lens kept fogging up from the temperature change. Took LOTS of pictures, but wished I would have brought a  longer lens to capture more from my sideline bench. Here are a few of the good ones from the morning:

YAY, swimming with Daddy!

Daddy, this is fun!

Jumping and playing with toys are MY FAVORITE!

Wondering what I am doing wrong?

Sydney has been a little stinker. A few nights ago, he was being naughty and cranking on the dials to the washing machine. (Lucy showed him that trick last week; thank you Lucy, my sweet!) Immediately, I told him "NO, we don't do that!", removed his hand and tried to re-direct his attention to something else.

Instantly, he grinned and ran to do it again. "Stop!" I scolded. (He laughed at me; ironically, I was not wearing a game face or using a wishy-washy tone... I was serious!) I grabbed his arm to remove him from wrecking one of our most-commonly-used appliances. Again, redirecting attention to something else.

Watching me out of the corner of his eye, taunting me, he approached the washer again. "Sydney..." I warned.

I took him to "The Naughty Corner" and he had a time-out. Granted, I had to HOLD HIM THERE because he kept trying to run back into the kitchen. I reminded him "We don't touch that! We don't want to break it." After that (30-seconds or so) was up, I said "Leave it alone. Do you understand?" (He nodded YES!)

The little stinker, when released, ran STRAIGHT TO IT and did it again - with a HUGE SMILE on his face! Immediately, I scooped him up and took him back to "Time-Out". (How did this become such a game? I wondered.)

"NO!" I scolded. I grabbed his arm and set him into the dining room. He landed on his butt and looked at me with a "what did you do that for"-kind of face. He hopped up and tried it again so, I corralled him back into the dining room and put up the baby gate. Naughtily, he grabbed ahold of the baby gate and pushed and pulled on it - stretching it to it's limits in either direction - and yelled in protest.

We moved on. Thankfully, he did, too. HOWEVER, yesterday, after he woke from his nap, he was acting especially naughty. During his slumber, he had found a new desire to hit things. Using a spatula from our kitchen, he started whacking Eddy (sleeping on the seat of the recliner) with the kitchen tool and newly discovered weapon of choice. Eddy was freaked out! I quickly grabbed it from him and scolded "No!" Immediately, he grabbed one of the extension tubes for the vacuum cleaner and used that to chase after Eddy - trying to hit him with it. "Sydney, NO! We don't hit our cats!" I rescued Eddy to higher ground. "Why are you being SO NAUGHTY?" I asked.

Immediately, he looked me squarely in the eye - smiled - and ran to the washing machine to crank the dial.

Grrrr, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?!?! (I'm claiming that this extra dose of SASSY is from his father's genes.)

Happy 100

This morning, when I opened my blog, I was greeted by the floating baby widget displaying: 100 days to go!

Excitedly, I report that TOMORROW will be double-digits, people! YAY!

Number 2 has been VERY ACTIVE! This morning, as I lay in bed, I think he had a case of the hiccups. It felt funny! Sydney lays his cheek and/or hands on my belly ALL THE TIME - making me wonder if the two brothers can SENSE each other; I hope they are the best of friends someday! There is also a new fascination with my protruding navel; it gets poked and kissed A LOT!

Number 2 should weigh around 2 pounds now; I read that he's starting to pack on the fat now to fill out his skin. New this week, his eyes are now open, but the pigment hasn't been determined quite yet. (Mike's logistics say that "Any girl babies should get Daddy's brown eyes and boy babies should get Mommy's eye color genes." Mine are a greenish-gray color. Sydney's eyes are still BRIGHT BLUE!) So, it will be interesting to see what color eyes Number 2 has when we meet him in May. We're betting that he'll be SUPER CUTE because our genes seem to blend well together. :)

Adoringly, we call this baby NUMBER 2, but we seem to be getting closer to agreeing upon a name for him. It will be nice to start calling him by his name so that he knows WHO HE IS when he's born. (We talked to Sydney ALL THE TIME when he was in my belly... and by WE, I mean - mostly ME; however, we always called him by name, which was agreed upon MUCH EARLIER in the pregnancy.) SOON, I hope...

Yep, we need to choose his name pretty soon - otherwise, I fear that he will start to think that his name is Old McDonald. :)

Happy 100, Number 2! We're growing more and more anxious EVERY DAY to meet you!

Project Life
On a separate note, I have wanted to participate in the Project Life scrapbooking project. Just last week, the creator of the kit was taking comments on her blog and was giving away 2 kits. (I have had my eye on them for a while now, but they were SOLD OUT!) She got 2,800 entries registered to win one of two kits. One winner was in Oregon; the second winner was in Dubuque, IA. Sadly, though, my name is not TIARA so, I was NOT the winner. :( I am pleased to report that they are back in stock now and I have ordered myself one (with the $85 credit I got from returning A LOT of old MaryKay makeup that was still in the boxes and never worn; YAY for me... that was extra spending $ for something fun!) :) I hope that this will be an easy way for me to get my scrapbooking groove back on - since I haven't really done much of anything since before Sydney was born.

I hope that this PROJECT LIFE kit will allow me to capture a snapshot of our lives, which will be a treasure to look back upon.

Scrapbooking memories from my blog:

Lately, I have also been working diligently on Sydney's album (digitally) when he has been going down for a nap. I hope to get his album caught up before Number 2 joins us; I can't believe I have fallen so far behind. (I am LOVING his album and can't wait to order prints of the 12x12 pages that I am working on!)

I am SO THANKFUL that I have this blog - to capture our lives. The blog, to me, is a treasure. Someday, I hope to order a copy of it (in printed form) so that I have it to hold onto forever; I would probably want to order a copy for Sydney's "baby book" and eventually, for Number 2 as well.

Birthday Gift Ideas...

So, if anyone is looking for birthday ideas for me.... HINT - HINT...
• I like to use Walgreens for printing out our photos... on the rare instances that I actually do just that. (I will need to start printing some out for my Project Life album.)

• It looks like gift cards are available for the partner company of my blogger website to turn my blog into a printed book (to store in our safe as a treasure) OR a cash gift (to me) could be applied toward this purchase:

Loving playdates with Lucy

Lucy came to play at our house this morning while Kate went to a doctor's appointment. She announced BYE-BYE and waved as Kate left, but really didn't seem to notice that she was gone because she was having fun playing with Sydney.

Lucy and Sydney are VERY COMPATIBLE together. They play well together. They both like to run. They both like to jump. They both like to play with toys. They both like to hug. AND they both like to knock on the bathroom door while Mike is inside - trying to do business. (Of course, he was knocking back and DID truly enjoy it.)

"Hi Mike." Lucy would say through the door while knocking.

"Hi Lucy." Mike would reply and knock back.

"Ah-Da" Sydney would say, knocking.

"Hi Sydney!" Mike would reply.

Ironically, Mike is called by his first-name, while I am called "Sydney's mommy". (That's OK though because I am PROUD to be Sydney's mommy.)

Lucy was delightful to have around; she's a very lovable (and talkative) kid PLUS it gave Sydney a rare opportunity to share his toys and the attention of his parents. Sydney proudly pointed at me and announced "MAMA" as if he was telling Lucy "Hey, that's MY MOM!"

While Mike was quizzing Lucy on animals and their sounds, Sydney decided to join in with the few that he knows/communicates. (It seems that HE wants to talk more after he sees us interact with Lucy.)

They are SO CUTE playing together! They like to hug. They drag each other by the hand around the house. They share from each other's snack bowls. They like to do what the other is doing... such as, playing DRUMS on a diaper box with toy spoons or feeding cat treats to Eddy.

Sydney needed a diaper change. As soon as he was done, Lucy laid down on the changing pad and announced "Lucy's turn!" (Her diaper was dry; therefore, not changed.) Sydney, however, watched this scene transpire and was WILLING to lay down on the diaper changing pad this afternoon - just like Lucy did earlier! (He truly IS a little sponge, soaking everything up in the world! Gosh, we love him!)

It is SO DIFFICULT to NOT compare your kid to someone else! Lucy speaks many words clearly, knows her colors, identifies animals, sounds and foods, can identify a few letters of the alphabet and can quickly count from 1-to-10, missing only one number along the way. She also speaks in short sentences - such as "Sydney, let's run", "Chase you", "It's Lucy's turn", "Sydney's cat Eddy" and "Lucy's cooking." She is TWO MONTHS older than Sydney and clearly VERY BRIGHT! (You could see her wheels turning as she analyzed and identified the color of Eddy's feet when quizzed: WHITE.)

My mom reminds me that Michael and I were the same age, but VERY DIFFERENT. I spoke clearly, using real words from the English language - while my twin brother babbled baby talk and made car noises.

Sydney IS starting to attempt more words every day. Just this week, he has said HELLO (hew-wo), ARM (ahm), HELP (hep), DIAPER (dipah) and ONION (clear-as-a bell, perfect!) He is also VERY SKILLED at non-verbal communication while Lucy never learned ANY baby sign language. He's also been working on saying A-E-I-and O with Daddy, as well as ONE.

He'll talk when he's ready!

Wants SO BADLY to be a BIG BOY

Sydney wants SO BADLY to be A BIG BOY!

Last night, he indicated to Mike that he had to go POOP. (Poop, to Sydney, means potty, poop or just gas.) Mike asked him "Do you want to use your potty chair?" Excitedly, Sydney ran as fast as he could towards the kitchen.

They tried, but nothing magically appeared inside the potty chair. Sydney, however, did NOT want to give up. He kept signing "his own little version of sign language - POOP" and indicated that he did NOT want to quit yet.

I indicated to Mike that I have been sitting on the floor by him and that we have been reading books - including his book about going potty and being a big boy. So, Mike said "We can do that!" and sat on the kitchen floor, leaned up against the tall cabinet. Soon, Sydney sat his naked little butt next to Daddy and looked over at Daddy with admiration.

Eventually, Daddy convinced Sydney that we'll try again another time and that it was time to shower off the chlorine, put on a diaper and jammies and brush his teeth.

Tonight, as I was getting Sydney ready for bed, he became angry when I went to put on a new diaper. He started signing POOP and grabbing at his damp diaper. "Do you want your diaper back on?" I questioned. (His head violently shook NO!) "Do you want to go on your potty chair?" (Our little streaker ran as fast as he could to the kitchen, as if he thought I would never ask.)

We sat in the tiny bathroom for a minute or two. No luck. We read books. Then, Sydney hopped up and ran to the living room to gather more books. When he came back, he sat on the floor by the tall cabinet - exactly where he and Daddy sat last night. I moved his potty chair there. He hopped up to get his one of his other books from the tiny bathroom, but in his excitement (and the fact that he was overdue to go to bed) he smacked into the wall between the bathroom and the kitchen, leaving a goose-egg on his forehead almost instantly. Crying, he ran to me - to give ME a hug and have me kiss it for him. (He consoles US when HE becomes upset; too cute!) Then, we looked at it in the bathroom mirror. I thought that the goose-egg would be reason enough to go put a diaper on, but he had A FIT that I suggested such nonsense and wanted to sit some more.

Sydney continued to want to sit on the potty chair, hopping up often to look inside. I kept trying to convince him that a diaper was in order, but he kept signing POOP and pointing to the potty chair. He had little red marks on his butt because he kept reaching back and poking at his little cheeks, but INSISTED that he needed to go in the potty chair.

Desperately, he wants to be a big boy! After 25 minutes, I convinced him that we would try again another time and that it was time to go put on his diaper and jammies so that we could go brush his teeth.

Once he finally SEES potty or poop in the potty chair, I think he will start to appreciate the process more - and perhaps, will stop trying to take the bowl out of the potty chair then, too. (That is probably wishful thinking on my part.) Mike thinks that once he figures out his muscle control, that things will go easier too. It's all part of the learning curve...

Smiles for swimming

We attended another session of swimming lessons at the YMCA. Sydney is enjoying them MUCH MORE than he did last time (late June through July) and I am pleased to report that...

HE SMILES for swimming!

He really enjoys watching the other participants in the water, singing fun songs and splashing in the water. I'm thinking A LOT of his smiles are for his own happiness, in that, he is making US - as parents - proud that he can follow directions and that he is VERY GOOD at kick-kick-kicking his feet!

He's still a little leery about jumping off the edge of the poolside into our arms in the water - despite silly songs; although, that took him most of the season (last time) to be comfortable... actually, EXCITED to do. (He holds our hands tightly and kind of lets one leg fall into the water as we PULL him towards us.)

Although, much like Story Time at the library, he keeps holding out for the end of the session so that he can play with new TOYS. (He also likes to play with his good friend LUCY, who we are convinced is part-fish.)

• • •
THOUGHT: Perhaps, I will TRY to sit out for an upcoming session - letting Mike and Sydney enjoy the water together - so that I can snap a few pics with our fancy new camera.... since our old camera didn't take very good pictures in those lighting conditions last summer.

Leaving an expensive camera, unattended by the poolside, just doesn't sound like a wise decision.

PLUS, by ME offering to operate the camera guarantees that I will not be photographed (feeling as BIG as a small house) PREGNANT in a swimsuit!

Boiling eggs forgotten on stove, Green Eggs and Ham

One of Mike's FAVORITE Children's books is the Dr. Seuss classic "Green Eggs and Ham". He spotted it one day when we were shopping at Sam's Club and he had to have it to read to Sydney. Sydney LOVES when Mike reads it to him because Mike does VOICES for Sam and "the other guy".

He reads it SO WELL that sometimes, Sydney makes him read it a couple times in the same sitting.

On more than one occasion, I have found Sydney quietly sitting and looking at this book. The day that these jammie pics were taken, we had been cooking in the kitchen together and when we were adding HAM into our recipe, Sydney soon disappeared. I found him in the recliner (a.k.a. Daddy's chair) announcing "ham, ham, ham, ham, ham...." as he flipped through the book on his own.

This morning, Sydney and I were in the kitchen - making the recipe I found online for Carrabba's Spicy Sausage Lentil Soup (Mike's FAVORITE restaurant in the whole wide world and one of his favorite dishes from there). Per instructions, we added HAM. I had saved some aside for Sydney's lunch. I also peeled him a hard-boiled egg. (I had forgotten that those were on the stove and they boiled gently for close to an hour so, I feared that WE would have green eggs; thankfully, the one I gave Sydney looked PERFECT - not green at all!)

I had announced "What a good lunch! Sydney has apples, eggs and ham."

All of a sudden, he felt the need to hop down and run (as fast as he could) to the living room. When I didn't follow, he came charging back to grab me by the hand, encouraging me to follow him quickly.

He patted the floor and pointed to the ground, encouraging me to sit. (I sat.)

He quickly rummaged through one of the baskets of books and tossed the orange-covered one onto the floor in front of me and hopped onto my lap. (Of course, I knew what he was up to.)

"Ham." he boasted; Then, he pointed to the EGGS.

"You're right!" I replied excitedly. "Sydney was eating EGGS and HAM!"

He shook his head in agreement. You could tell that he was QUITE PROUD of his AH-HA moment.

YEP, just like Daddy... Sydney LOVES "Green Eggs and Ham". (He made me read it TWICE before we could go back to finish his lunch.)

Testing patience with a toddler

Sydney has been testing us by challenging his boundaries a lot lately.

He has grown to LOVE watching television and has started to throw MAJOR TEMPER TANTRUMS when he doesn't get his way. Normally, during the week, we watch Sesame Street from 9-10am and often watch Sid the Science Kid until 10:30am; then, I turn off the tv. (I miss the days when I could have the Today Show on in the background as we hung out.) He had since started DEMANDING to watch tv throughout the day and has become VERY UPSET when I turn it off or say NO. He has also started demanding to watch MOVIES; he has a Winnie the Pooh movie and a few Sesame Street movies, which he is asking for ALL THE TIME NOW!

For a while now, I have felt that we watch too much tv in our household; Mike likes it on whenever he is home because he enjoys it. Sydney knows this, too, because as soon as Mike gets home, he tries to tempt him with the remote to turn on the tv after spending the day with mom saying NO. (Sadly, Sydney DOES turn the tv on himself, but needs to have the cable box on at the same time for anything to happen. Sometimes, he tries both. Sometimes, he does them in the wrong order. Sometimes, he figures it out. Little stinker.)

As temper tantrums have been getting worse, we've been watching less and less tv and I have been encouraging more playtime, more coloring, more cooking and more books. There are times that Mike gets phone calls at work where I threaten to go to the bar after he gets home from work. (I, however, do NOT drink and he knows this; although, there are instances when I feel as if I may want to start.)

Early this week, I had informed Mike that we have NOT been watching tv AT ALL!!! He seemed surprised and slightly disappointed.

There has been A LOT of yelling (clarifying: Sydney yelling, NOT US!) There has been A LOT of anger and frustration. There has been A LOT of whining.... and crying... and stomping feet... and throwing toys/books. Calmly, I remain unruffled by these temper tantrums. I quietly tell Sydney "Don't yell at Mommy."  or "Let's read a book!" or "Hey, let's talk." I try and try to divert his attention to something else.

(This kid IS stubborn though! It is AMAZING how long he can carry on for!)

We had a few SOBER DAYS in and it seemed to be going a little better. With lots of distractions, it had been going well - to the point where one day, he was entertained enough that he wasn't begging for it.) One morning, I was HORRIFIED when Sydney and I came down the steps (upon waking) to discover that Mike had forgotten to turn the tv off when he left for work at 4:30am. Sydney, with an open mouth and look of genuine surprise, excitedly pointed at the tv. We watched the "Local on the 8's" and I immediately turned it off. Then, I quickly convinced him that we should go cook some oatmeal in the kitchen; thankfully, he thought that oatmeal was a great idea and I got lucky. (We spent MUCH of that day cooking and staying busy.)

Then, one day, Mike thought he would "just try a little tv" again because he thought I was over-reacting. He quickly saw first-hand WHY I have been protesting the tv and WHY I had decided to go to such drastic measures. Ironically, Mike - who HATES... flat-out DESPISES... going with me to the grocery store - VOLUNTEERED to go with me to the store after I had offered for he & Sydney to come home (after we retrieved my car from the shop) and for ME to go to the store alone. Mike INSISTED that they come with to the store because he couldn't take any more of the temper tantrums and whining from Sydney and thought that a distraction would be good for him.

For our sake, I want US to remain STRONG and IN CONTROL;
I don't want our household tv viewing to be controlled by a 20-month-old INSISTING that we watch what HE wants/when HE wants. (Thankfully, Mike has cooperated and watched tv while Sydney sleeps.)

I am hoping that by all of the movies being hidden, he will eventually FORGET* about them. (So that we ONLY watch DVDs in the car... on long trips - only if he's already napped). I am also hoping that if we keep the tv remotes tucked out of sight, that he will not be so addicted to them, needing his fix as a tv junkie. *It will be a lovely surprise to pull out the Sesame Street Christmas movies next December, don't you think?

Earlier today, I wanted to laugh when Sydney begged for tv; He was SO ANGRY that he tensed his arms, clenched both fists, raised his shoulders close to his ears, clenched his teeth, shook his head and upper body while yelling/growling at me. As much as I wanted to laugh, I did NOT do it. Instead, I hugged him and said "Wow, I can see how angry you are. I know how much you like to watch television, but we have LOTS of things to do today. Are you ready to help mommy in the kitchen?" Calmly, he hugged me and thought that helping in the kitchen was a GREAT IDEA.

I think this is a stage in development where he is testing his boundaries and trying to express his wants. (I believe you can call them "The Terrible Two's".)

He's throwing a fit when WE do something that HE wanted to do by himself. He's discovering that he is "a big boy" and is proud of all of his accomplishments as he is learning new things.

He voices his opinion on what dish he wants to eat something out of: he eats applesauce and fresh blueberries out of ramekins, NOTHING ELSE WILL DO! (You'd think it was the end of the world if you attempt to serve it out of a different bowl.) He likes the color of his cup to match the color of the lid; you can't mix a green lid with a blue cup or else: it IS the end of the world! Also, sometimes using a sippy cup is insulting, as he wants to drink only out of a kitchen glass or a regular cup - like mommy & daddy - because he is A BIG BOY!

Sometimes, he is insulted that we try to HELP HIM put on his shoes or his boots because he wants to do it himself. (He often needs help, especially with the shoes!)

We're finding that: He is very specific about picking out his own foods. He likes to look inside the fridge and decide for himself. We can make suggestions, but HE often wants to be the one to decide what HE is eating. (It was easier when he was younger and he ate what we served him; with his growing independence, he knows WHAT he likes and wants now.)

He grows VERY UPSET when he eats all of something (i.e. an entire kiwi fruit), asks for more and is told that it is ALL GONE. (Obviously, we need to work on taming this frustration so that he can, with a rational mind, realize "oh, this is all gone so, I will have to eat something else now" - without raising his voice in frustration.)

We're trying to push LESS JUICE and MORE MILK into his diet, per pediatrician's recommendations. We're told he should have 4 ounces of juice per day; we were giving him 4 ounces per serving - with multiple servings in a day. We're trying to push water as well. We've starting offering him a juice box to enjoy on Sundays when Grandpa Lowell comes to visit and not throughout the rest of the week. Today, he threw a fit that he wanted a juice box. Instead, I had offered him a cup of juice (because he hadn't had any yet today). THAT was the end of the world. Eventually, with all that fussing (and the fact that I wouldn't cave in), he decided that he was THIRSTY afterall and a cup of juice sounded great.

At almost 20-months old, he has discovered that if Mommy says NO, he can ask Daddy for the same thing. We learned this after Sydney asked Mommy for a pickle for breakfast; mommy said "We don't eat pickles for breakfast!" Within minutes, Sydney had conned Daddy into a pickle for breakfast. We figured this out and have now started leaving notes on the dry erase board on the fridge so that we're not disregarding what the other parent already said. (i.e. SNACKS: we have a YES and a NO column so that we are both clear on what choices are available and to make sure that he doesn't eat too much of any one thing... he would LOVE to eat pickles, raisins, hot dogs, and various fresh fruit all day long if we would let him. Unfortunately, we have learned that too many grapes, too many pickles, too many raisins, etc can cause a bad diaper rash.)

He's starting to show frustration when helping out in the kitchen as well - because he has a new fascination with emptying out the silverware/utensil drawers and playing with/helping to measure spices. He has figured out how to open the spice drawer on his own and (standing on tippy toes, reaching inside blindly) pull out a few spices. He has also figured out that he can drag his dining chair from his "helping station" to alternate places in the kitchen to rummage through the drawers. He's starting to push our hands out of the way because he wants to try to cut things himself - with a butter knife. He was excited to discover a set of steak knives in the back of the silverware drawer today... EEK! It is starting to look like we need child safety latches on all of our drawers now, too.

We're starting to see why they say "nothing is taller than a two-year-old" as he becomes more and more courageous with climbing and getting into trouble; he seems to have NO FEAR or concept of danger, whatsoever.

No one ever told us that parenting was easy. Now, we see WHY that statement has never been made. It is challenging, but also VERY rewarding.

(Edited) NOTE: Our child is NOT a monster; he's a VERY LOVABLE little boy who is filled with fun, fascination, loads of personality and TONS of affection! (He just started  exploring "the Terrible Two's" a few months early.) We're still treading in unchartered waters here as first-time parents; ironically, I'm not as fearful to add Number 2 to the mix because we have graduated from ROOKIE-status. Sydney is just breaking us in and teaching US how to be parents. I truly, truly LOVE being a mom!

Big boys use the potty

A few days ago, we purchased a potty chair for Sydney. We figured that the time was drawing near, as he is demonstrating more and more interest in watching US go to the bathroom and he often tells us when he's going to the bathroom.

One day, I was TRYING to go to the bathroom, but Sydney kept sneaking behind me and trying to push my butt off of the toilet so that he could SEE INSIDE. I kept announcing (loudly) "Sydney, I think Daddy needs your help in the living room." but Mike pretended not to hear me. (I think I said it SEVEN TIMES - louder and louder each time; Of course, he heard me the first time, but was having fun making me sweat it out on the toilet. He thought he was being funny. Me? Not so much.)

Whenever Mike goes, Sydney likes to race into the bathroom so that he can watch. (Only ONCE did Mike yell that he needed an assist because Sydney had reached in to touch the pretty yellow stream.)

When we took the seat out of the box, I set it on the kitchen floor and asked Sydney "Do you know what this is?" Immediately, he grabbed his crotch. (I take that as a YES.)

I helped him sit on it (fully clothed) and we practiced the mount and dismount. He would sit on it for a few seconds and then HOP UP to check inside the bowl, as if something MAGICAL had happened. He would wave into the bowl and then, we'd do it all over again. Sadly, however, he eventually learned that it comes apart and he wouldn't stop taking it apart and playing with it's pieces. (He likes to wear buckets and bowls on his head, pretending they are hats so, naturally, I am a little uncomfortable with the possibility of the "new hat".) We locked the new potty chair in the bathroom by the kitchen.

This morning, I offered to let Sydney wear BIG BOY PANTS as we cooked in the kitchen. I figured that the kitchen floor is a MUCH BETTER place to practice potty-training instead of on the wood floors or area rugs in the dining/living rooms. He was SUPER EXCITED to wear big boy pants. (He picked Grover.) Almost immediately when we went into the kitchen, he decided that he needed to go potty so, we stripped off his pants and Grover undies and I helped him on the potty chair.

He sat VERY BRIEFLY and then indicated that he was ALL DONE so, I let him off. A few seconds later, he indicated he had to go to the bathroom so, I set him back on it. Again, same thing... ALL DONE. You could tell he was proud, but nervous. Within a few seconds of him getting off, he announced UH-OH and was standing next to the toilet in a small yellow puddle.

Hey, at least he peed IN THE BATHROOM, right?

I assured him "Good job! What a BIG BOY you are! You went potty in the bathroom!" but he seemed concerned about the mess on the floor. I took off his socks and wiped his feet (and the floor) with a combination of paper towel and Clorox wipes, telling him "That's OK." A few minutes later, we called Daddy (at work) to celebrate the news!

After his first attempt of going potty on the potty chair, he INSISTED upon leaving his pants AND big boy pants off, but within the half hour, he had accidently peed on his chair (that he stands on in the kitchen to help cook) and I decided to re-diaper him... to take the pressure off of him. (You can tell he feels VERY BADLY about making a mess because he SO DESPERATELY WANTS TO BE A BIG BOY.)

At one point, he took a cooking spatula and a measuring spoon over to the bowl of his potty chair and attempted to STIR inside that bowl. (Eeeew!) I discouraged that behavior and put those utensils in the sink to be washed; then, we locked the potty chair in the bathroom and I told him to knock on the bathroom door if he has to go potty (since he doesn't really TALK).

I'm guessing that we aren't REALLY ready for tackling this yet so, I wont push it too much, but we wont discourage him either. Anytime he goes potty, poops (or even just farts), he signs POOP and makes sure that we know he's making a mess (or some activity) in his diaper. We're making sure to ask him if he wants to go on the potty chair; sometimes, he says YES, but sometimes, he says NO.

Our pediatrician informed us that MOST BOYS potty-train closer to age 3. As nice as it would be to have only ONE CHILD in diapers, we'll see where this potty training adventure takes us...

Playdate with Lucy: OMG, New tricks

We had discussed after Tuesday night's swimming lessons that Kate & Lucy should come over for a playdate. Kate announced that she was OFF on Wednesday so, we invited them to come play. (The photo of Sydney playing with my new cell phone was taken by Mike. He was proud that he got a picture of Sydney, looking like he is texting "his girlfriend" so, I used it for this layout.)

While they played, we laughed because they would both run into the kitchen or would both run hide behind the recliner. We teased that they were "looking for privacy". At one point, Lucy disappeared into the kitchen and didn't come running right back out. Kate announced "Oh, crap. She's probably inside your washing machine." Sure enough, she was. Turns out, she wasn't partially IN, but all the way inside. (Sydney witnessed her being pulled out by her mom and we decided that it was best to make sure that the laundry doors are kept CLOSED when Lucy comes over. I had hoped that he didn't notice, but he seems to pay attention to EVERYTHING! Oh, how I wish that hadn't have happened... but he probably would have done it eventually on his own someday anyways.)

Lucy also climbed onto our couch to say HELLO to Eddy. Then, with static-charged hair, she started jumping UP & DOWN on the seat of the couch. Ironically, Eddy didn't move from the back of the couch; I think he may have been paralyzed with fear. Sydney, of course, thought it looked like GREAT FUN to jump on the couch. Thankfully, he's still mastering the art of jumping; his style keeps his feet planted and he raises his body up & down by bending at the knee. Someday, he'll have that mastered as well. Lucy IS a few months older.

Mike and I are AMAZED at how much Lucy talks! Sydney still does NOT say much... just a few words here and there. She also identifies all of the Sesame Street characters (clearly) by name, as well as colors, animal sounds and toy food. Kate said that "all morning, she has been walking around our house asking SYDNEY? SYDNEY?" - wondering WHEN we were coming to your house to play.

We know that SOMEDAY he will talk... when he is good and ready.

Hanging out with Lucy is a good gauge of what behaviors are coming our way... YIKES! (I guess THAT is why they remind parents at the Well Child appointments that "Toddlers at this age need CONSTANT SUPERVISION.")

18 Jan 2011: LUCY, U WANT 2 COME 2 MY HOUSE 2MORROW 4 A PLAY DATE? - SYDNEY

19 Jan 2011: Lucy came to our house to play. She & Sydney dragged out most of the toys that we own, as well as the adult balance ball. They hugged. They chased each other. They ran. They read books. They played in the toy kitchen. They played with blocks. They had juice. LUCY EVEN TAUGHT HIM A FEW NEW THINGS: how to stand on the couch to JUMP up & down AND... how to climb INSIDE the washing machine! (EEK! Maybe he didn't notice. Yeah, right!)

KATE: Where is...
SYDNEY: (pointing) RIGHT THERE!

Uh-Oh... x+24.2 is 7.1 heavier than 2009's 24wk

I feared going in for my appointment today; in fact, I've DREADED IT for weeks! At my last appointment, Doc said that I had gained 7.4 pounds since the previous month. (I thought that was a mistake, but she held the numbers in my file and I'm not good at remembering numbers.) When I questioned her about my weight (last time), she instructed me "Well, don't gain 7 pounds between every appointment."

Hmmm, interestingly enough, I gained ANOTHER 7.2 pounds, which she laughed was less than last month's gain of 7.4. Doc didn't seem concerned AT ALL. We compared it to my first pregnancy... when we first met her at our 24 week appointment. My current weight was still considerably LESS than my 2009 weight.

I, however, was CRUSHED.

Venting: Damn all those baked goods and delicious hors d'oeuvres over the holiday celebrations. Damn all those cravings to eat... sometimes just an hour after my last meal. Damn these varicose veins bulging from my left leg, as well as the fluid retention in that ankle. Damn this discomfort in my low back/hip region where I sometimes have to CRAWL to the bathroom in the middle of the night. And don't get me started on having to wear these stupid, but obviously helpful, support hose!

I thought my weight gain week-by-pregnant-week was comparable to last time. Mike assured me that it was fine; "afterall, look how good Sydney turned out!" BUT looking back on my blog, in early 2009, I felt concerned at 24 weeks when I had already gained 17.1 pounds – knowing that 25-35 is the recommended weight gain allowance.

During my appointment, I joked that I need to start wearing the same outfit to the doctor's appointments so that my clothes are at least consistent. Sassily, Mike said "Or wear LESS clothes." I laughed, but deep down - this weight gain makes me want to cry.

24.2 POUNDS! Horrified, I keep repeating the number to myself throughout the rest of the day. (I already know that Number 2 is scheduled to gain 6 ounces PER WEEK from here on out.)

Mike assures me "not to worry because it will all come off during breast feeding." (Yes, I "hope" that my body/MS will cooperate and that I will be able to do just that.)

Still, it makes me want to cry. (Hey, at least it doesn't make me want to over-eat. Right?)

:(

As we walked to our car, Mike announced "Despite knowing he's in there and normally moving around quite a bit, that's got to make you feel a little un-nerving when the nurse can't find the heartbeat." (Today, she struggled A LOT to find it - searching repeatedly on both of my sides, but eventually finding it right smack in the middle of my belly; while you lay there, however, it FEELS like an eternity.)

"I know." I replied. "Especially after she asked if I've been feeling a lot of fetal movements, that made me stop and think that he hasn't been super, super active today. Granted, I know he has periods of quiet, too. He just found a comfy place to sleep."

On a more positive note:
• Number 2's heart rate was good (144)
• my blood pressure was good
• my soccer ball-sized uterus measures right where it should
• there were no traces of sugar or protein in my urine
• Doc gave me a brochure on some exercises I can try - in hopes that it can ease some of my hip/back pain by strengthening my low back/hip/butt muscles. (The chiropractor has offered no such advice so, THIS is at least worth a try!)
• my silly cough has been basically gone for about a week (YAY... finally!)

My next appointment (28 wk) tests for Gestational Diabetes and starts us going in every 3 weeks for regular appointments.

Deep breath. Sigh. It IS what it is. Regardless of my new weight complex, I grow anxious to meet Number 2 - who likes to remind me that he's living inside of my cozy uterus. AND just today, I informed Mike "I really LOVE being a mom!"

Parent/Tot Swim, whale in the water

We recently signed up for swimming lessons again; we hadn't gone done them since mid-July and wondered if Sydney would enjoy them any better than last time. Thankfully, he wore a smile on his face for MUCH MORE of the lessons this time around; it probably helps that he's done it before and was somewhat familiar with what was going to happen. (They did NOT force us to dunk our kids under water this time, which I think also helped a lot.) Despite the spa-like warm water, he shivered a lot. I think he was still a little bit nervous being in the water; he liked to hold on tight to Daddy.

After bearing a swimsuit in public, at the Parent/Tot Swimming Lessons, I kind of needed to see this pregnancy email update that was in my In-Box this morning. (I was ALREADY dreading my doctor's appointment - scheduled for this afternoon - because of my fear of the scale.) Somehow, I felt strangely HUGE donning my old maternity swimsuit; Mike reminds me that I will be entering my third trimester reasonably soon and that I am supposed to be BIGGER.

It didn't help either that there was a mother of 3 there wearing a tiny bikini and sporting a FANTASTIC body; she's currently still nursing her set of twins so, I wonder how THAT helps her metabolism.

Truth be told, I never looked like THAT after giving birth.

My friend Kate (Lucy's mom) and I decided that we MUST be doing something wrong; Kate's guessing "Genetics" has something to do with it. (She also wondered where the other mother's stretch marks were.) I wonder if/how she finds time to work out.... or if NURSING TWINS was the answer.

(Sigh, it took me TEN MONTHS to lose my pregnancy weight last time!

Mike reminds me that MAYBE I CAN look like that... afterall, I "WAS" pregnant with twins in the beginning. (Yeah, a girl can dream....)

Weight Worries During Pregnancy

After a lifetime of watching your weight, it can be unnerving (and sometimes depressing) to watch it go up, up, up.
Repeat after me: I am not fat, I am growing a baby. After a lifetime of watching your weight, it can be unnerving (and sometimes depressing) to watch it go up, up, up. Whenever you feel bummed about your expanding girth (and your expanding bum), remind yourself that there's a beautiful reason your body is changing.  To fuel that baby growth at 25 weeks pregnant, you need to keep your growth going, too, so dieting's never an option when you're expecting.  Instead, eat as healthy as you can (remember, you share every bite with your baby), and eat as much as you need to in order to gain at the right rate. (One more time, with feeling: I am not fat, I am growing a baby!)

Baby 2 at 24 weeks

I'm not sure WHAT is happening... my baby tickers are all in disagreement: one says 108 days to go, two say 109 days to go and one says 110 days to go. (I guess I'll trust the 2 that say 109.)

Earlier today, I informed Mike that I am nervous to go for my 24 week appointment later this week; I dread the scale - hoping that I did not over-indulge too much over the holidays. He assured me NOT to worry... it IS, what it is!

He also informed me "Do you realize that you are ALMOST into your 3rd trimester already?" (I think that happens a little closer to his birthday, but I suppose THAT is right around the corner....)

I'm pretty proud to say that I am still able to lay flat on my stomach from time-to-time; although, Mike reminded me that I'm probably squishing Number 2 and that I wont be able to do that much longer. (I can expect for baby to start gaining 6 ounces per week now - packing on some fat!)

This pregnancy has gone by SO FAST! Number 2 - still nameless - remains QUITE ACTIVE! I can tell that he's getting stronger and stronger with his kicks & punches. I'm finding myself wondering WHO he will look like - picturing in my head - a little cloned version of Sydney. (Afterall, our genes meshed together pretty well the first time.) Hopefully, we'll decide upon a name before we meet NUMBER 2.

Wonderful weekend for a winter wedding

It was a wonderful weekend for a winter wedding! We picked up our rental car on Thursday, loaded our stuff and headed (due east) to Wisconsin. Unfortunately, an upgrade with cruise control was not available so, Mike had to "watch himself". It took us slightly longer to get there than usual, but nothing remarkable. Thankfully, the weather cooperated for our travels!

Grandma & Grandpa Olson were VERY EXCITED to see us, as well as the growing "baby bump" that is reportedly MUCH BIGGER than it was at Christmastime. (Perhaps, wearing horizontal stripes wasn't helping my cause, but YES... baby bump IS bigger, as is the hole-selection on my belt.)

FRIDAY
Friday, we ran some errands in the morning and then, met Grandpa Olson at Culver's for lunch. We took Sydney home - in hopes of him taking a nap before the 3pm wedding - but the little stinker had other plans. He sat in his crib, talking to his babies... Tigger, Elmo and Uncle Mike's old nostalgic Dapper Dan doll. Grandma Olson & I watched him through the crack of the door while Mike slept on the bed (oblivious to the fact that Sydney was NOT SLEEPING). Sydney would pick the doll/stuffed animal(s) up, one by one, and look them squarely in the eye, talk jibberish to them, give them a hug (or pat them, as if burping) and then lay them down. I reminded Sydney on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS that he needed to nap so that we could go dancing. I told him that his babies were going to have to go sleep somewhere else because they are tired, too. After a few warnings, the babies were taken to Grandma's bed. But I could STILL hear Sydney talking. Peering through the crack of the door, he was crawling around the crib and pointing at all of the ducks on his blanket, announcing "Duck, Duck, Duck...."

After an hour and 15 minutes of screwing around, he was JUST starting to settle down! Needless to say, it hardly seemed fair to wake him from such a short nap so, we decided that Mike would stay home from the church-part of the wedding so that Sydney could nap.

It was a BEAUTIFUL WEDDING... Rachel made a beautiful bride, Aunt Sue & Kristen both looked super cute and all of their hard work had paid off - because everything looked PERFECT! (They did ALMOST EVERYTHING themselves and it looked fabulous!)

Here is the happy couple - during the ceremony.

(My baby bump is DEFINITELY larger than Rachel's baby bump... and we're only a week apart!)

After the ceremony, we gathered some stuff from the church and delivered it to the reception for them. It looked BEAUTIFUL inside the new Veteran's Terrace. Then, Grandma & Grandpa dropped me off to get Mike and Sydney ready to go. While they went for cocktails at a nearby restaurant with Uncle Jim, Aunt Barb & Auntie Karin, we went to the reception hall and reserved ourselves a table. As the room filled up, we were pretty glad that we had done that - and even more glad that we had a diaper bag full of books to set out at various place settings as place-holders.

While holding Sydney, he all-of-a-sudden gasps and points clear across the room. He had spotted Aunt Sue from across the crowded room. "Do you want to go see Aunt Sue?" I asked. (He nodded.) I set him down and he ran between all of the tables, making a B-line straight to her. (She was equally excited to see him; they are BUDDIES! Sydney LOVES Aunt Sue!!!)

Sydney was VERY PATIENT, sitting at our table, signing that he wanted to eat. I talked to the servers, asking them what the order of the tables was - discovering that we had quite a while to wait. They gave us permission to sneak into line after the head table and parent's table went through. Mike did sneak over to steal a pickle for Sydney to snack on while we waited for the food lines to start moving.

Also, Aunt Sue & Kristen both kindly dropped food off at our table for Sydney; unfortunately, all he would eat there was a little roast beef, some cheese & crackers & PICKLES!

He was fascinated watching it snow outside the large windows. Some smokers decided to take a short-cut in/out a nearby door. Sydney thought it was a perfect opportunity to EAT THE SNOW that they tracked in off of their shoes! Ah, the mind of a 19-month-old...

(Sydney with beautiful cousin - maid of honor - Kristen.)

Eventually, we could tell that Sydney was getting tired. (We already knew that he hasn't been feeling himself lately... he had lost a little of his spunk and had red cheeks for half of the week, most likely from teething.) He wasn't his typical smiling self...

We diapered him and dressed him in his jammies. Then, made our rounds to say GOODBYE. He was pretty snuggly and tired - ready to go home and go to bed.

(Sydney LOVES to Skype with Aunt Sue & Rachel; He gets SUPER EXCITED to see them! Now that Rachel is married and taking her laptop with her... we'll have to see how often we can SAY HELLO on the computer. Maybe she will visit her parents and bring her laptop with her from time to time...)

SATURDAY
Saturday, we were surprised when Sydney took Mike by the hand - from the basement, up the stairs, through a room full of people in the kitchen, up another flight of stairs and indicated that he wanted to go to bed. His NAPTIME was overdue, but we were pretty proud that HE was the one that indicated that he was tired and wanting to sleep.

Sydney suffered from "monkey butt" on Saturday. His butt was BRIGHT RED and obviously VERY SORE! (This happened a few days after his cheeks turned red last time too. However, it also happened after he ate a lot of pickles - both times, as well. He DID eat pickles at our Culver's lunch and had 2 pickle spears at the wedding. Mental note: monitor pickle intake, as much as he loves them!)

Late in the afternoon, we diapered him and lubed him up thick with Butt Paste. He wiggled in pain, crying and yelling "OW! OW! OW!" the whole time, which is heart-breaking. Tears rolled down his cheeks, collecting in his ears; that NEVER HAPPENS! We made our voyage home again (because Mike had to work for his boss' Sunday shift).

It was a short trip that went fast. And was SUPER NICE to see my family!

Word explosion in early January

Sydney's Christmas present from Rachel was a Leap Frog talking pot with veggies.
When you take the lid on & off, there is a sensor that announces "ON", "OFF", "OPEN" or "CLOSED". Thanks to this toy, Sydney now says the words ON and OFF.

This morning, I asked Sydney "What should we have for breakfast?" Immediately, he pointed to the microwave and smiled a HUGE GRIN - as if he had just won the lottery jackpot. "No, we're NOT eating cookies for breakfast, but nice try though." Then, he ran to the fridge door and said "Ow-oh-oh". (This is how he has been consistently saying HOT DOG; other times, he drops the second OH.) So, for breakfast today, Sydney picked: a hot dog, an entire orange and a few carrots - to go with his cranberry juice. YUM! (Shiver.) All of this, of course, was AFTER we had finished off the fresh blueberries.

Sydney also has a slightly jibberish word for APPLESAUCE. (It's the APPLE-part of the word that is tricking him.) I wish I could tell you how he says it, but it's a tongue-twister of a word, especially since he likes to leave the first letter off of his words. It is recognizable enough that you can guess that he is trying to say applesauce though. I give him credit for trying!

This afternoon, in the bathtub, Mike and Sydney were talking. Mike was working on vowels with Sydney. After a little practice, Sydney says: A, E, I and O. (The U seems like a lost cause at this point.)

We went on a dinner date tonight to Salsa's Mexican Restaurant. Sydney LOVES to eat their salsa & chips. Thankfully, we brought a bib and a dishtowel for protection of his shirt... last time, his clothes were sopping wet from the salsa dripped all over his front. He especially likes that he gets HIS OWN BOWL of salsa there. Tonight, when his drink of water was gone, he indicated that he was still thirsty and motioned for mommy's drink. He got SUPER EXCITED to see that there was ice in my glass. Mike got Sydney to say "Mama, ice." and to motion the word PLEASE. It obviously helped that they just worked on saying "I" in the bathtub.

YAY! Another word for Sydney... the boy who almost never speaks! :)

NOTE: He says MaMa, but sometimes it is Am-Ma. He says DaDa, but sometimes it is Ah-Da. He LOVES to say UP, but sometimes that also means DOWN. And his new favorite is UH-OH. Ah-Pa-Pa still means Grandpa, but sometimes that means Grandma, too. It, apparently is interchangeable at this point... in the mind of a 19-month old.

Our day in review...

Today started off as a good day.

Sydney slept reasonably well, only waking at 10:30pm last night for a short snuggle with mommy. When we went downstairs, Sydney started saying "DaDa? DaDa?" wondering where Mike was. When I said Daddy was at work, he pointed to the phone and said "DaDa". So, we called to say "Good Morning." While the phone was ringing, Sydney kept saying "DaDa, DaDa, DaDa", but once Mike answered, he wouldn't say anything, but DID wave at the phone with his hand. Daddy had asked us if we were having OATMEAL for breakfast. Sydney shook his head NO. Mike suggested TOAST. Sydney shook his head YES. Although, after we hung up, Sydney INSISTED that we make oatmeal. (He is SO PROUD that he can point to all of the cabinets to tell me where we keep the oatmeal, bowls, measuring cup, brown sugar and raisins. He also has to stir it himself; he physically removed my hand that was holding the bowl in place because HE had to do it all himself. He's getting to be SUCH A BIG BOY!)

While the oatmeal was cooling, we had some fresh blueberries; however, he INSISTS that they be served out of a ramekin because an ordinary bowl just won't cut it. This kid KNOWS what he wants!

After breakfast, Sydney watched a little bit of television. Today's Sesame Street episode was about a case of "Mine-itis" so, I purposely did NOT turn that episode on. Sydney does NOT know the word "mine" and we hope to keep it that way for a while... While I was making myself breakfast, he came running into the kitchen to drag me by the hand to the tv. Elmo's World was featuring brushing your teeth. (This is the same episode that he watched yesterday, which explains why he insisted upon brushing his teeth every time we went upstairs yesterday.) During the segment, a little girl announced that she eats CARROTS because they are good for her teeth. Sydney immediately bolted to the kitchen and stood, pointing to the fridge. We opened the door and sure enough, he pointed to the vegetable drawer and INSISTED that he needed carrots, too. He took a bite and then, pointed to his mouth, announcing "teeth". Funny kid!

After I was done eating and Sydney was done with Sesame Street, I invited him into the kitchen to help me make a breakfast strata.  We used a glass and a biscuit cutter to cut shapes out of bread. I thought for sure that he would LOVE this part. He grew bored with it and just wanted to rip the bread. He LOVED snapping the ends off of asparagus; although, he kind of snapped the entire stem of it so, I had to pre-snap the end and then let him snap it into small pieces for me. He thought that was fun. His favorite job was helping with the cheese. The recipe called for process cheese cubes. I cut them into cubes and Sydney LOVED to arrange them on top of our torn bread pieces. Then, I gave him some shredded cheese that we needed to use up; he had a great time sprinkling that on our dish.

While I diced some onions and ham, he disappeared into the living room. (I found him sitting in the recliner with a copy of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham. He was flipping through the book, announcing "ham, ham, ham" as he turned the pages of the book. (It was cute!) When I was done dicing the ham, he enjoyed arranging that on top of the cheese and asparagus; although, you could tell that he REALLY wanted to pick up the entire bowl of ham to speed the process. After transplanting a few handfuls of ham, he DID pick up the entire bowl and dumped it onto our dish. Then, we spread it out.

He LOVED that we had to count out 6 eggs. Then, he did his Sesame Street LAUGH - like "The Count". (That, too, was SUPER CUTE!) He motioned that we needed to use the whisk to stir the eggs. This 19-month old certainly knows his way around the kitchen!

Sydney's lunch and nap were a little bit later than usual today. I still had time to shower before my haircut at the beauty school. (As I was hopping in the shower, I could hear a snowblower. Frank, across the street, had come to clean up all of our snow for us, for which I was VERY THANKFUL; although, I had promised Sydney that after his nap, he could go outside to shovel snow with Daddy.)

On my way to the beauty school, my check engine light came on and the car displayed an error message: ALTERNATOR WORKSHOP! (Mike and Sydney were BOTH napping when I left so, I left a message on the answering machine so that I would remember what the error was.) After my SUPER CUTE haircut, I went home to have a quick snack and then, brought Sydney down for a haircut. When we got back home, we talked to the neighbor about the car problems and she offered to go with me/us to have it looked at. (She has a mechanic background.) I told her that we could do it AFTER dinner & swimming lessons.

When we got back from our haircuts and visit next door, the house smelled delicious; Mike had prepared dinner. We ate and got ready for swimming lessons. Tonight was our first session of Parent/Tot swimming lessons at the YMCA (since we did it in June). On the way, Mike glanced over at my dashboard and informed me "that's not your check engine light, that is the battery light". Within a few seconds, I suddenly had a few more lights lit on my dashboard and we scurried to turn off the heated seats, the radio, etc. As we drove, we watched the dashboard suddenly start to dim. Mike announced "You need to pull over right away." YEP, turns out, the car died a few seconds later. We tried to restart it, but it was DEAD-dead.

Mike offered to run home to get the truck. (He said he only lasted a few blocks running before he had to walk the rest of the way.) While we waited, I took Sydney out of his carseat (since we had to move it into the truck anyways to get home.) When I got out, I noticed that my back end was blocking someone's driveway. Great! (I thought.) I turned on the ignition and was surprised that it started so, I pulled ahead. When Mike got there, we restarted the car (again) and he turned it around so that it was headed in the right direction (home). I followed him in the truck. It didn't last very long so, thankfully much of the stretch home was DOWN-hill and he was able to coast. As we got closer to home, he pulled over and we switched drivers. I sat in my dead car, with it in neutral and he pushed the back end with his truck as I attempted to steer home.

Once we were home, he did announce that we cracked the paint off of the back bumper a bit. Neither of us were super upset by this. To both of us, it's "just a car"; in my past life, it would have been THE END OF THE WORLD. (Did I mention how much I LOVE my husband and how happy I am with this NEW LIFE OF MINE?) We went to the neighbor's house to see if we could borrow a battery charger (since Lisa told us to NEVER BUY ANYTHING without checking with them first). While Mike hooked up the car, Sydney and I tested out Sydney's new shovel (that he had been BEGGING to use for most of the afternoon.)

Mike hopes that the car has enough charge by tomorrow that he can take it to an auto store for a diagnosis. (We can rescue him in the truck, if needed.) We were relieved that THIS happened today instead of on our way to WI for Rachel's wedding later this week. Mike was also relieved that it happened NOW instead of while he's away at corporate seminars... which is in a few weeks. Hopefully, we can get my car back into action again... otherwise, we might be renting a car for the weekend!

Our haircuts are cute. Our bellies are full. We missed swimming lessons. The car is broken down. (And the truck is already scheduled to go in for over-due repairs next week.) Thankfully, we are all healthy and happy.

Tomorrow is a new day.

He REALLY pays attention!

This afternoon, after a handful of uncomfortable nights, we went to the chiropractor. (I had been avoiding going in because I stayed uncomfortable for SO LONG after my last adjustment and was finally starting to feel pretty good overall. Then, all of a sudden, I was having to CRAWL to the bathroom at night and didn't have the strength to lift my one leg when laying on my side because of a nerve pinch.) Mike wanted an adjustment today, too.

While we waited in the office for the doctor to finish with his previous patients, Sydney was checking out the open exam room. Sitting in the room, at Sydney's perfect level, was an open case that held an otoscope. (It was in a disassembled state, resting inside the case.) He reached for it, but I quickly re-directed him back out into the waiting room, telling him that THAT was NOT a toy for babies to play with.

A while later, while we were chatting with the doctor, Sydney ran back in and grabbed the head piece of the otoscope and immediately inserted it into his ear. There was NO DENYING that Sydney knew EXACTLY what it was for. He OBVIOUSLY pays attention whenever we take him to the doctor.

Perhaps, he will grow to be a doctor someday?

On a separate note, after we brushed our teeth tonight, Sydney pointed to my makeup compact that sat on the vanity shelf. Then, he started to rub his hands on his chin and cheeks - pointing again at my makeup compact.

I don't wear makeup very often, but OBVIOUSLY he has watched me put it on at least once. He knew EXACTLY what that was, too.

This kid REALLY pays attention!

No one noticed the shoes

This morning, while Mike was going to the bathroom, I noticed that his underwear was on inside out. He didn't seem to care all that much because he was tired and un-enthused to go to work. (He clocked in 60 hours this past week.)

Later in the day, when we talked to him on the phone, he questioned if Sydney and I were going to be running out later in the day. I explained that I hadn't necessarily planned on it, but inquired WHY.

Mike informed me that he was wearing two different shoes.

"What do you mean 2 different shoes?"

"Well, they are BOTH Reebok, but that's about the only similarity. They are two different colors... like one is navy blue and the other is white."

"Seriously? THAT is funny! So are they making fun of you at work for it?"

"Surprisingly NO. No one has noticed... or else they are too polite to say anything."

Interestingly enough, today was NOT a day that he was up at 3:45am getting ready for work. He didn't have to be there until 7:30 so, he should have been a little more alert than that, getting up at 6am.

I reminded him that his underwear were on inside out and said that he could use that as ammo to detract from the shoes if anyone noticed. "No, I think I'll keep THAT to myself." he quickly replied.

When he came home from work tonight, I couldn't wait to see (and take a picture) of his mis-matched shoes. He said they were VERY BUSY all day at work and that thankfully no one noticed the shoes.

I still think it is pretty funny! (At least he wasn't wearing two left - or two right - shoes.... and they WERE on the correct feet.)

Ah, honey... thanks for the laugh! That made my day. :)

Entertained in the kitchen for the day

This is my little helper. He had taken a break from cooking in between our Chicken Barley Soup and our (after nap) Dessert making. While I was de-boning my chicken, I had spotted him laying on the floor in the living room. He had taken this pillow off of the bench and was covering himself up with the non-slip rubber pad as if it was a blanket (indicating that he was getting ready for his nap). He was busy talking to his toy cow (from his Old McDonald tractor set). I grabbed the camera and laid on my belly in the dining room to capture a few photos. Of course, as soon as he saw me - he charged the camera - crawling as fast as he possibly could because he likes to see the pictures that we take. With our fast-shooting new fancy camera, I was able to get a few shots of him coming towards me. This one was the cutest expression though. He is a funny little guy!

While I was busy in the corner by the garbage can - pulling the outer layer of onion skin off - I suddenly heard a strange noise, followed by an immediate "UH-OH!" THIS is what I found...

somehow, the entire container of chopped vegetables has "tipped itself over" on our kitchen counter. Sydney thought it was a perfect time to sample the celery since he had only helped taste-test carrots up until that point.

While I was chopping the carrots and celery, Sydney was busy making a SPICE TOWER out of chicken bouillon cubes, poultry seasoning, bay leaves, dried sage, and black pepper. He was having a GREAT TIME! (He kept sampling the carrots, too.)

After nap, we decided to make a dessert. I would measure and hand it to Sydney to dump into the bowl. Then, I would give him his own bowl of all of the same ingredients. He thought it was fun to eat flour and had it all over his face and fingers. (YUCK!) He liked it a little better when I tossed some old fashioned oats in. He liked it A LOT when I threw in some brown sugar!!! As he was playing in (and eating) his mixture, he kept announcing "Yum, Yum, Yum!" He stayed entertained - playing with his bowl of dry goods and an assortment of measuring spoons and measuring cups. He would scoop and pour and sometimes play in the flour mess on the counter. He was having A GREAT TIME!

Sydney had been baking in navy blue pants and his winter boots. His blue pants were covered in flour handprints. His boots and chair were dusted with flour. His thermal long-sleeved shirt - with animal print - had a completely WHITE front with NO VISIBLE PROOF OF ANIMALS. It took a few minutes of patting and dusting his chest (with A LOT of giggles) before we could see the animals again. The kitchen was a mess, but we had TONS of fun together... we are busy making WONDERFUL MEMORIES!

Baby 2 at 23 weeks (belly pic)

Today, we're celebrating our pregnancy for Number 2:

161 days down. (23 weeks)
119 days to go. (17 weeks)

Seriously, the time has passed SO QUICKY, but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that we live busy lives.

Number 2 has been QUITE ACTIVE and Mike has enjoyed feeling his kicks & punches as we lie in bed at night. This week, I did notice that I could visually WATCH my stomach move as Number 2 threw punches near my belly button. It was kind of funny.

Sydney has taken a new liking to poking at my belly button. Perhaps, it is because he has noticed that it is starting to poke out a little bit.

One thing is for sure... "the girls" have grown - especially the right one! The sports bra that I had been wearing for belly photos is starting to be ill-fitting. Will most likely have to move back into my old nursing bras - for comfort moreso than style.
