Sydney's birthday started with Daddy sneaking into the bedroom (before work) and putting BALLOONS all over Sydney's bed and his half of the bedroom.
At 5:05am, Mommy awoke (from a sound sleep) to "Mommy? I thought you would like to snuggle with me because it is my birSday!"
Disoriented, I smiled, trying to open my eyes, perplexed how he climbed into bed with me, without me even knowing it. "I DO want to snuggle with you. Happy Birthday!"
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday
to you!
Happy Birthday,
dear Sydney....
Happy Birthday to you!
He leans over and kisses my cheek and proceeds to rub it in. Then, we snuggle, for 45 minutes or so, before I finally realized that he is far TOO EXCITED TO SLEEP, while I am kicking myself for staying up so late (close to midnight) last night.
Sydney LOVED the surprise of the Crayola Window Markers where I had drawn a cake and giant happy face on the dining room window. The FIVE balloons I had drawn had DRIPPED down the window so, we wiped those off. Then, Sydney and I used the markers to decorate the windows.
We decorated the driveway door.... PERFECT for a party!
Classmates (and siblings) in attendance, joining Sydney and Silas:
Jack, baby sister Taryn, Chloe, Grant, brother Harry, Brayden, sister Cadence, James, Katie, baby sister Libby, Sophie, Kimberly, and twins Matthew & Samuel. (Thankfully, most of the mothers stuck around for some social time and to help.)
EMBARRASSMENT 1: I had asked Mike to get switch plates and outlet covers for the Bonus Room. Instead, he used brown packaging tape and TAPED over the missing ones on the ceiling and walls. It looked 100% REDNECK! (For working IN a home improvement store, I was SO EMBARRASSED for parents to see that.) Our beautiful VIEW from our yard, more than made up for it though.
We played in the bonus room. We drew on windows. We attempted to do a relay race. (Epic fail.) We enjoyed apple juice and cupcakes. The spinners were busy flying while we sang Happy Birthday to Sydney.
We passed out treat bags: fruit snacks; yellow, smiley face balloon; yellow bendable smiley guy; 2 sheets of smiley face stickers; bottle of bubbles shaped like an ice cream cone AND star-shaped sunglasses in various colors (*favorite colors reserved for children who Sydney knew their favorites... Grant and Samuel get YELLOW, Jack gets RED.)
Then, most of the parents left because many of them had to pick up other children from school.
A few stayed for Sydney to open presents. (Chloe, Sophie, Katie, Matthew & Samuel) Many of the children made their own cards for Sydney; super cute! Samuel even MADE Sydney a coloring book.
EMBARRASSMENT 2: Sydney opened Sophie's gift and muttered, sadly "Oh, it's JUST Legos."
Sophie's mom quickly announced "The receipt is in there if he wants to take it back."
"I don't think he means it like that. He has NO IDEA HOW COOL LEGOS are! He will LOVE THEM!!!"
We talked about Silas and his constant NEED to put EVERYTHING in his mouth and how we've stayed away from Legos so far, sticking to Duplo blocks.
We played a while longer with the twins and Sophie. Later, Sophie decorated our front window; she was the class artist. AMAZING TALENT!!! We visited with her mom, Amy.
Sydney requested PIZZA for supper: pepperoni, meatballs, cheese AND black olives... on the side!
(Mike brought ingredients from Papa Murphy's and we made it all ourselves.) "Daddy's got it covered!" he proudly proclaimed. (Looks like we have enough to make MORE, too!)
EMBARRASSMENT 3: After opening Grandpa's birthday card, Sydney announced "It's just five dollar." (We reminded him that GRANDPA bought us THE BEST MAY BIRTHDAY PRESENT... a family swim pass so we can swim EVERY DAY if we want to! He agrees that THAT is pretty awesome.)
Turns out, Sydney DOES LOVE Legos! (Grandpa Lowell and Sydney built the logging truck last night before bed; unfortunately, it had rolled off the table and crashed into a half-million pieces, causing a MAJOR past-my-bedtime/woke-too-early MELTDOWN.
Sydney was asked "WHO were you MOST EXCITED TO SEE today?"
ANSWER: Kimberly!
(She has been his FAVORITE GIRL since 3K. In 4K, he also talked about Kylie or Chloe once in a while.)
Sydney's FAVORITE BOY in 4K
ANSWER: Matthew (twin)
(He knew that he was "best friends" with one of the twins, but could never remember which one. Their mom, Sally, informed us "Matthew and Sydney LOVE to play together at school!" (Phew! NOW we know WHICH ONE.) Proudly, by the end of the year, I could tell the twins apart. They are both neat kids!)
We are HOPING to meet up with classmates this summer for playdates and pool time. Sydney IS sad that no one else is going to the same kindergarten as HE is. After dinner, he did wonder "Do I have to go to kindergarten TOMORROW?" and seemed relieved that WE HAVE A WHOLE SUMMER OF PLAYTIME AHEAD OF US FIRST!!!
An AMAZING BIRTHDAY for an INCREDIBLE BOY! Sydney we LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!
("To the moon, and sun and ALL OF THE PLANETS... and back" he often says.)
*Mom re-built the logging truck Thursday morning. VERY COOL!
