We learned A LOT about apples today!
We learned that RED DELICIOUS apples have five bumps on the bottom. We learned about picking and handling apples. We were even tricked by one that wasn't an apple at all... it was an Asian Pear! We learned that the bottom of the apple used to be the flower. We learned that there is A STAR inside of every apple!
I was surprised to learn that apple picking is a delicate process because you have to be careful not to disturb the bud for next year's apple.
We learned how to KEEP DEER FROM EATING the apples. (Bars of Irish Spring Soap hung inside of nylons deters them; they have one hanging every three or four plants, they reported.)
Each person got to take an apple off of the conveyer belt.
Mommy bought some (delicious) apples for home; we are hoping to enjoy BAKED APPLES for dessert one day this week! We also bought a gallon of cider.
Sydney's class brought 17 kindergarteners. The spanish speaking school also came with on the schoolbus today, along with the teacher's aides. (Parents drove separately; three from Sydney's class and a handful from the Spanish Immersion School.) There were 12 Clarke College student teachers along as well. We had a very high student to adult ratio. Another preschool was also there for the tour this morning and all of the kids were good listeners.
VERY EXCITING DAY to ride on a schoolbus for a field trip! :)
