New skill for Silas - SITTING

This afternoon, while Sydney was napping, Mommy and Silas were busy...
working on some new skills!

Silas sat - all by himself - for a few minutes before doing a faceplant onto the living room floor. Of course, Mommy was sitting very close by to guide and protect him during his fall.

And just like riding a bike or a horse... we got right back up again.

He really liked reaching and playing with toys, too.

When Sydney woke up from his nap, I was pretty excited to show him his baby brother's new(est) skill.

Sydney was pretty excited to see Silas sitting up. That is one step closer to Silas becoming a playmate for Sydney. (We talk about how Silas has to learn how to do so many new things so that he can someday be big - just like his brother.)

It was a good day!

How about...

Mars vs. Venus AND Nature vs. Nurture

Author John Gray has been providing enlightening material into our household with our recent acquisition of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". Perplexed quite often with the concepts of this reading, I discovered how my actions and words (secretly) irritate my husband quite a bit. (I hope that HE will also read this book so that - TOGETHER - we will better understand each other and then we can improve our communication so that both of our needs are met and frustrations are minimized.)

I learned that: Instead of listening and empathasizing while a women talks/vents, men tend to try to fix our problems, which comes across as invalidating the feelings of the woman. Likewise, Women tend to offer unsolicited advice which comes across as criticism and belittlement. (I know I really DO offer unsolicited advice. Point taken!) The woman's intention was actually to be helpful.

Another example, I know that I use the phrase "could you..." quite often. I was raised to believe that COULD YOU is a polite way of asking for help. HOWEVER, I have now since learned that COULD is a highly offensive information-gathering word that men find snippy. (WHO KNEW?)

I have found myself in the situation where I have asked Mike "you wanna' change the baby's diaper?" to which he simply replies NO! From my perspective, I thought that I was asking for help and when I was (rudely) denied, left me feeling resentment as I had to do it myself. His take on it was that I asked if he WANTED to do it; he did not WANT to. Had I asked "Would you change the baby's diaper?", he likely would have agreed and done it. Apparently, I had gone about it quite wrong.

Not knowing the Would vs. Could-thing, I found this eye-opening. I wondered WHERE the male species learns that the word COULD is so darned offensive. Is this something they teach in sex-ed? Aren't most English teachers in school actually women? How could I have missed out on this important lesson that COULD/CAN is highly offensive to our penile counterparts?

This leads me to ponder... what will happen to the little Martians that I am raising under this roof? Will they learn the communication skills from the planet Venus or are they pre-programmed and pre-wired to be Martians? (Afterall, we've noticed that BOTH boys have the eye-brow wiggle gene from their father - noted at quite young of an age for both of them.) This appears to be a perfect example of Nature vs. Nurture.

As I continue to read this book, I keep apologizing to Mike and informing him that I do A LOT of things wrong. For once, his "YES DEAR" canned response is appropriate. I also keep asking him "Really? That's what you really think?" and informing him "that's not what I meant by that." (It is somewhat mind-boggling to learn about the Martians and their way of life; it explains A LOT!) Let's just say that I'm not "all bad" and by reading this book, I am making an attempt to change (some of) my ways; Mike has plenty of room for improvement, too.

Interesting... and insightful. I have A LOT to learn!

Eat more dirt please

Tonight, Mike made dinner. For dessert, he served leftover brownies with vanilla ice cream. Mike quickly scarfed his down and informed Sydney "mine is gone; you share with mom."

So, being a good twin, I shared.

Sydney started to freak out. "No ice cream. No ice cream!"

"No ice cream?" I questioned.

"Just dirt please."

After we had emptied our bowl, Sydney begged "More dirt. Eat more dirt and ice cream please."

That WAS the tastiest "dirt" I've eaten in a long, long time! (I'm pretty sure he KNEW we were eating brownie; not dirt.

What a kid! :)

Waterpark Trip for family of 4

Monday offers a discounted rate at the Waterpark. The kids are young enough that they are FREE so, we're just paying for adults. Since Daddy had vacation today, we decided to go - spend the morning as a family at the waterpark.

Grand Harbor Resort

Sydney shows Daddy around. (Sydney's favorite is the hot tub... he's often COLD with his lack of bodyfat on his skinny frame.)

Over here, there is a tiny slide for little people:

Sydney learned (with/from Daddy) that he can do it himself - if he goes down sideways/feet first.

Silas attempts to sit up so that he can see what is going on.

Sydney, excitedly, tells everyone about the GIANT BUCKET of "wah-go" (water) at the waterpark. It dumps 350 gallons of water every 8 minutes. Once we arrive, though, he is afraid of it... every time we're there. It is very BIG and LOUD!

Here it goes:

Daddy and Silas enjoy floating in a raft on the lazy river. Silas thinks it is a perfect time to nap. Sydney and Mommy enjoy the waterslides - timing it so that we don't get caught in the BIG BUCKET DUMP.

Mike's own little MINI-ME version:

A self-portrait - to show that Mommy came with, too:

Despite begging NOT to go home, Sydney was tired. His tell-tale sign... the itchy nose... is proof:

And a 2 year old temper tantrum in the car was additional proof:

Sydney, by the way, did NOT make it home; he fell asleep during the one mile ride home.

Feeding Silas first food

Today, we decided that it was TIME to feed Silas solid foods; he started on rice cereal this morning. Sydney was REALLY EXCITED to help feed Baby Silas.

We started by letting Silas play with a spoon while sitting in his high chair. Looking on, Sydney quickly corrected him "Turn it around. Utter end _ilas". After handing him the handle to hold, he announced "das bettuh".

Sydney and Daddy fed Silas his first rice cereal. Silas appeared to like it very much and was quite interested in more, More, MORE - intently watching the location of the spoon at all times.

AND Big Brother Sydney liked being a helper.... just like in his Mercer Mayer Little Critter "All By Myself" book:
(but with a lot LESS MESS - and no umbrella involved)

Sigh. Our kids are getting bigger!

Family photo shoot 10.08.11

Are these – or are these NOT - THE CUTEST KIDS EVER?!?!?

Seriously, TOTAL CUTENESS!

Somehow, me missed the opportunity for us to "POSE" for a family picture at the wedding. {I was proud of the ensemble(s) that I put together for each of us to wear to the wedding... "happy green", white and browns.} This photo, at the church, is the best we could do to show for all of us:

So, after being rather disappointed, I asked Mike this morning if we could re-dress like we did for yesterday's wedding. Along with some rolling of the eyes and a deep sigh of despair, he asked "Do we have to?" to which I replied "Yes, please."

We gave Nana a few lessons in how to use our fancy camera and I had scoped out some photo spots in their yard. After a little photo tweaking and cropping, here are the best of the bunch:

P.S. Silas, we are sorry that your belly was hanging out in at least one photo. It is what it is, little buddy. You're still SUPER CUTE!

NOTE: I'd like to remember.... at the wedding, a gentleman approached me in the lobby. He informed me that he took note of me as soon as he spotted me at the church, but wanted me to know that my outfit was absolutely perfect... that I nailed it... spot-on perfection and elegance for a wedding. (I was later informed that he is Tony's gay uncle... a fashionista in Chicago.) That made me feel good in my selection of attire.

When I bought this outfit, I was SUPER EXCITED to wear it to the wedding because it made me feel pretty. Mike had informed me that I looked like June Cleaver and suggested I wear an alternate dress to the wedding.

I gave my cousin, Kristen, the final call on what I should wear to her wedding. She suggested that I wear the super cute green one to the wedding, but wanted me to wear the other one OUT for a date with Mike. (That is a nice compromise; now, I look forward to a date with him and a reason to feel pretty again.)

A sad day for Mac, the world mourns

There is an empty place in the world today; a sadness in many hearts. Mac envisionary, Steve Jobs, passed away.

Because of his great invention, I have proudly owned THREE Macintosh computers (in this PC-based world) - and have LOVED every one of them. Thank you for these FANTASTIC user-friendly computers!

Not loving it so much in the middle of the night

Giggling at yesterday's mid-day posting of how much I love being a mom and the warm-fuzzy feelings that it brings. Turns out, in the middle of the night, after COUNTLESS wakenings, those warm-fuzzy feelings have snuck out our open bedroom window, leaving me with feelings of despair, wanting desperately to get some sleep. (So much for going to bed early because I was tired... turns out, I got A LOT LESS sleep than I had hoped for!)

I contemplated changing my name in the night... thinking that MOMMY had lost it's appeal.

The boys were taking turns waking up in the night. Sometimes, they woke at the same time. We did have a 2:30am potty party, as well. Our toddler also displayed signs of having a fever in the night. (He woke this morning - at 8:50am - complaining of a sore throat, but some purple juice and a brand new episode of Sesame Street seem to have distracted him of that ailment for now.)

Daddy is OFF today. Looking forward to enjoying the day as a family, enjoying the warm(er) temps, sunshine AND eventually naptime! (Also looking forward to the warm-fuzzy feelings all over again, too!)

Loving motherhood.

Sigh.

Glowing, warm-fuzzy feeling all over... unable to keep a smile off of my face while thinking about my two wonderful children:

I
love, Love, LOVE
being a mom!

28 months VS 5 months

SYDNEY: 28 months old

Size 4 overnights for naps and nighttime. Potty-trained during waking hours.
Weighs 28 pounds at Nana & Papa's house. According to the sign in the kid's department at Target, he is about 37" tall. At his 2 year well-child check-up, he ranked 75% for height and 10% for weight; he's STILL a skinny-little-thing!

Wears 24mo/2T shirts and 18 month bottoms! (Although, he'll need bigger bottoms for the length soon, I'm afraid. Being that he is diaper-less, wont help hold his pants up either.)

Identifies all capital letters of the alphabet, counts to 20, can identify most colors and common animal sounds. Sings songs independently and as a duet.

Naps mid-day. JUST upgraded to big boy bed after discovering the ART of climbing out of his crib.

Sydney is now 28 months old and talks ALL. THE. TIME! (Teacher Patty/Parents As Teachers indicates that he is very advanced in his vocabulary for his age and we believe it!) He is a little chatter-box and LOVES to ask questions.

He is easiest to understand in context and he is starting to get frustrated if we can't understand what he is trying to say. If we tell him SHOW ME, he often is able to gain our comprehension. When he is around other family/friends, I often remind him that he will have to try really hard to say his words right so that other people can understand him, too. He's a good sport about it!

He continues to push our buttons, constantly testing to see what he can get away with. Per Dr. Mullen's suggestion, we have tried to implement 1-2-3 Magic; although, we still use way more talking than necessary (i.e. we warn a few times and then ask "Do you need a timeout?"). He's a very smart kid; if we ask him to stop banging his toys on the wall, he will often tap them lighter. Reading between the lines, we asked him not to BANG; therefore, gently tapping MUST be OK. Of course, he KNOWS EXACTLY what he is doing to still get his way.

While driving in the car, Sydney watches stoplights and announces "Green, Go. Red, Stop!" (Just what Daddy wanted... another person in the car telling him what to do. Tee-Hee!)

Numbers are starting to make more sense to him now. He can count to 20. He also can count if he has five items in his hand. Sometimes, though, he will count the same item(s) over and over in his hand, pointing to each one (obviously, more than once).

He sings ABC's. For a while, he nailed it - missing only the L. Lately, he has been singing a roundabout version... where he will sing a letter that sounds similar to what SHOULD go there; then, will proceed to sing the next sequence of letters. (i.e. A-B-C-D-E-F-- P-- Q-R-S -- G -- H-I-J-K (still skips L) M-N-O-P... Q-R-S-T-U-V, bayou, X- Y and Z!)

While playing independently, you'll also discover that he sings songs such as Hokey Pokey; Row, Row, Row Your Boat; If You're Happy and you know it; and Old McDonald.

At bedtime, he sings TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTLE STAR; knowing most of the words and the melody. He also likes to "hum" it - in a near-singing voice. He also surprised me one night by knowing a bunch of the words to DO-RE-ME, which I used to sing to him nightly.

He acts out many animals and their sounds. We really like when he crawls on his knees, hissing like a snake; we've never seen a snake quite like that, but it still makes us giggle. After visiting the Milwaukee County Zoo, his selection of animals has increased.

We often have time-outs for being naughty. He often KNOWS that he's being naughty. Daddy warns "if you do *that* again, you will get a time-out; do you understand?" Often, a time-out is up next on the agenda.

Sydney LOVES watching Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid, Between the Lions and Word World. "Is Elmo on?" is often asked. We often say "Elmo is NOT on." (Mommy makes him wait until 9am's PBS broadcasting. Although, the other day, he informed me "Elmo on when Daddy home." Perhaps, he has realized that we've got them recorded on the DVR box.)

He LOVES going to library storytime where his favorite is the moroccan shakers to "shake your sillies out and wiggle your waggles away". He flawlessly demonstrates the dance with his toy salt & pepper shakers or spices from the kitchen.

He LOVES to dance! and jump! and gallop! and climb! and throw/kick balls! Jumping ON the couch and off of the couch was fun, until mom & dad put the ka-bosh on that.

He LOVES to color with pen, pencil, crayons or markers. We tried finger paint with teacher Patty once; he loved it! (Mommy hasn't been brave enough to attempt it.)

He LOVES to play with playdough, but still attempts to eat it when we are not looking. (He still chews on crayons from time-to-time as well and licks the tip of his markers.) He often has marker all over his hands and face.

I *think* his two year molars are in. He likes to pry our mouths open and peer inside, asking "You got any molars in there?" (It is funny!)

Sydney STILL ADORES his baby brother! The feeling is mutual. The two boys smile at each other all the time. Silas LOVES to watch Sydney's every move.

SILAS: 5 months old

Size 3 diapers
Weighs 18 pounds 15 ounces. At last check, measured 23.25" tall.

Upgraded to 9 month clothes already. Likely have to switch to 12 month clothes by Christmas, for sure.

Scratches himself with his long fingernails. He is a thumb-sucker and self-soother. Nurses on demand.

Goes to bed on his own: tired, but awake.

Like clock-work, Silas wakes around 1am and 3:45am for feedings. Ironically, when pregnant, I would pee around 1am and (when Mike is on the opening shift) Mike's alarm goes off at 3:45am (and I would often get up to have a snack with him then.) Nurses in the night, but is strictly business.

More and more alert. Smiles. Coos. Giggles when we kiss his neck or when he thinks something is funny. Started "talking" and "singing" with a fingernails-on-the-chalkboard sound; smiling all-the-while!

Likes playing with toys; grabs at toys. Very skilled at getting toys into his mouth. Just recently discovered his toes; those are good for chewing, too!

Is often a side-sleeper; although, lately, we are finding him flipped over onto his belly.

Enjoys Pat-a-Cake, SO BIG and Peek-a-Boo with mommy.

Silas has been a remarkable baby! He is SO HAPPY and SO CONTENT all the time!!! Mike announces "It is easy to forget about him" insinuating that he is so calm and quiet - whereas older brother Sydney's presence is always known.

Silas fusses when he is over-stimulated or if he has had enough. He is content laying on the floor and sucking his thumb. He often just likes to be left alone.

Silas LOVES to be talked to! He's very smily and social. He's finding his voice and starting to talk back now. He smiles with his beautiful big, blue eyes! He's adorable!

Silas is showing signs of being ready for table food. He watches intently as we eat. He tracks the motion of our fork from plate to mouth. He reaches out to grab our plates. He'll likely be starting baby rice cereal within the next week or so. (He's still a GREAT nurser, too!)
