To the store NO MORE

I am growing frustrated taking Sydney to the grocery store when I can't buckle him into the cart. He has become A MONSTER and thinks it is funny to stand in the cart, pretend to be a jack-in-the-box, and to use the back end of the cart as a surfboard - all while Mommy INSISTS that he sit ON HIS BUTT.... NOW! (Sadly, now, it is a game for him.)

He also has taken a liking to LICKING the cart, sticking out his tongue and making gagging and obnoxious sounds. I tried to tell him "Sydney, that's gross. Keep your tongue in your mouth because no one wants to see it."

To him, he must have heard "Keep taunting me with your tongue by looking like a lizard, I really like that A LOT." (The gagging sounds and shenanigans are great, too... my favorite! Someday, I hope I can thank you for that... or I hope that YOU WILL HAVE A CHILD who frustrates you with this silly action.)

I'm now wanting to leave him home from now on when I go to the grocery store. (I've been saying this for my last few trips to the store.) Thankfully, at Sam's Club - where they have 2-seater carts, he still does pretty well. Mommy will have to start shopping with Silas or by myself.

I did think it was kind of cute when we arrived at Sam's Club. Sydney offered to stay in the car with Baby Silas to keep him company. I told him that I needed him to keep ME company inside the store. He informed me "I think you can find another mom inside the store to keep you company. I can stay here to keep Silas company." (After I told him that Silas was going with me, he agreed that it would be OK for him to come inside, too.) I thought it was kind of cute.

Synchronized sleep schedules PLEASE!

Dear Little Boys,

PLEASE start to coordinate your sleep schedules better. It would be MUCH APPRECIATED! And sleeping through the night (again) would be GREAT!

Love,
Mommy

It was LOVELY when Silas slept through the night TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW, but that hasn't happened again since. Sydney decided to wake a lot during one of those particular nights.

Lately, Silas keeps waking to eat at night (as he takes only one side and decides he is full, wanting to wake a short time later for another snack.)

Sydney, who used to know how to sleep VERY WELL has started waking up A LOT at night now... wanting to eat, wanting his blanket on, wanting to drink, wanting to snuggle in the chair, etc. (It's starting to get a little old, I'm afraid!)

Happy 1st Birthday Sydney!

Hand-made party invites for Sydney's first birthday:

Inside:

Made a carrot cake and cream cheese frosting. Made a paper template of a monkey face so that I could dust cocoa powder onto the cake. Should have used chopped walnuts instead because the cocoa was BLOWING around. Sydney is not an art critic yet though; he smiled at the MONKEY, MONKEY, MONKEY on his cake.

Also, I made a banana cream pie and created a NUMBER ONE out of banana and decorator frosting.

Sydney showed off his skills at the table: SO BIG!

And, check out this SUPER CUTE "Birthday Boy" tshirt (and a matching bib, not pictured.)

Following our serenading of "Happy Birthday" and blowing at the candle, Daddy gave Sydney the candle to lick off the frosting. Sydney decided to eat the candle. (Guess we can't save that one until he turns TEN!)

It appears that Sydney has lost some of the THRILL of  eating wrapping paper (like he did at Christmas). We got the most reaction out of his ELMO present from Aunt Sue, Uncle Willy, Rachel & Kristen. The BIG BIRD movie and SESAME STREET alphabet book from mommy & daddy also sparked a BIG SMILE on his face. (This kid LOVES Sesame Street, as demonstrated this morning as he sat on the floor in front of the recliner, watching his favorite muppet friends!) He also recognized the bottle of bubbles from Grandma Carol. (Sydney LOVES bubbles! In fact, we contemplated getting him a bubble mower for his birthday this year, especially since he LOVES to watch Mike mow the lawn, but it was rated for 2-year-olds; maybe next year, little buddy!)

Dear Sydney,

For nine months, I had waited to meet you, wondering what you would look like, how you would act and who you would become. I felt you inside of me, keeping me company, as well as dancing on my bladder and conducting exercise classes inside of my womb. I talked to you (inside my belly) so that you would recognize my voice when the day came that we would finally meet. Towards the end of my pregnancy, I would wake up each day wondering if TODAY was the day that we would get to sing "Happy Birthday to you!"

One year ago today, we welcomed you into this world and our lives have NEVER been the same. Gone are the days that we can pick up and go at a moment's notice because much thought, planning and preparation now goes into all of our trips, as well as LOTS and LOTS of extra LOVE! As parents, we try to think of everything we'll bring to satisfy your needs, as well as to occupy your curiosity and inquisition. We don't travel light, but each day is a wonderful, new adventure and we are SO HAPPY that you are here to join us on our journey.

I have discovered that being a stay-at-home mom is hard work, but is the most rewarding job in the world! This has been THE BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE (with YOU in it) and I look forward to many, many more!!!

I love you little man!   Love, Mommy

P.S. Sydney, Thank you for sharing your crackers...
and your love - with mommy!

Dear Sydney, I love...

Dear Sydney,

I just wanted to let you know that I love you SO INCREDIBLY MUCH!

You make me smile. You make me laugh. You give me that twitter-pated feeling because I have so much love for you. Despite Daddy teasing me for it, I still admit that I love you SO MUCH that it melts my heart and daddy continues to tell me that my heart must be one GIANT PUDDLE.

It is hard to describe in words - the smell of your hair, the softness of your skin and the sweetness of your breath or the elation created when hearing your giggles.

I love snuggling with you, holding you and playing with you. NOTHING beats your smile when we play Peek-a-Boo around a corner or object as your thrill to see me is so very genuine.

Although it is sometimes quite difficult to walk, I will someday miss having you hang onto my leg. The thought of you growing up and going off to school makes me sad; although, we enjoy watching your advancements as you grow.

I love how you flirt with me while you nurse; or how you will guide my hand to a specific spot so that I will tickle you there. (Often you take my hand to your foot, your knee or mid-way up your side.) I love seeing your exposed tongue when you crack a smile during a feeding.

I love digitally scrapbooking your life and capturing all of the joy you have brought to me. I feel like I could sit and stare at pictures of you forever. I hope you keep this personality of yours, as well as this special bond with your mom, FOREVER! I love you... just the way you are!

I love the fact that you are a perfect blend of daddy and I and that together, we created such a miracle: YOU!

I never knew how rewarding (and fun) it would be to become a mother. Thank you for making my life SO MUCH BETTER!

Love, Mommy

Happy 8-month Birthday Little One

Dear Sydney,

Today you turned 8 months old (35 weeks). You are getting SO BIG (and think that you are even bigger)! At last weigh-in, you were 19#.

You have 3 teeth: 2 bottoms and your upper left. Your upper right is a visible bump under the surface, but looks like it will take a little longer before it pokes through.

You eat solid foods like a champ: applesauce, apricot, pear, avocado, green bean, pea, sweet potato, squash. Lately, you decided that you do not care all that much for carrots and you have disliked bananas from the get-go. You are loving the Baby Yum Yums, which we call "crackers". (It is so cute to hear you crunch them with your little teeth.) The Gerber Graduate puffs are also fun for you to eat, as you display great pride in feeding yourself.

You have been crawling for a little more than a month and have got it down to an art. You are quite speedy actually. You have even figured out how to crawl UP the steps. (Grandma Olson will show you how to come DOWN them when she visits this weekend; although, I personally think you are too little to learn backwards crawling movements.) You pull yourself to a stand all over the place. You are cruising along the side of the couch, playpen or end tables to get places faster. Sometimes, we find you standing all by yourself with a toy in your hand - forgetting to hold on. Sometimes, I purposely stand you in front of me to count how long you can last.

I count: 1  - 2  -  3  - 4  -  5  -  6  -  7  -  8  -  9 ... of which, you have a HUGE smile on your face the entire time, with such a look of accomplishment. So far, 13 seconds is your best that I have counted.

I laugh when you crawl under the table and chairs. Sometimes, you bump your head - not noticing the legs. You like to see the cats under there. You are also good at finding any speck of lint, dirt, etc. and try to eat it.

We had a puppy (Scrappy) for most of the past month, but the two of you must have been having a contest to see who could get into more trouble. You both liked the strings on my hooded sweatshirt a lot. After 28 days, we got rid of the puppy because YOU were more than enough to contend with - with your mobility and sense of adventure. I recently teased daddy that we need a bigger house because you are running out of things to explore. Someday, when you are bigger, daddy hopes to try again with a puppy. Hopefully, you will be old enough that the puppy won't use YOU as a chew toy and you'll be able to help pick one out.

Next month, we plan to take you on your first airplane trip. We are anxious to see if you are as good of a traveler as you are in the car. We're gathering some toys and books to entertain you on the plane ride.

It sounds horrible to say, but YOU - at 8 months old - LOVE to watch tv! Your favorite is Elmo's World on Sesame Street. Whenever you hear the song for it, you stop whatever you are doing and watch Elmo on tv. You also like whenever there is music playing because you will sway to the music or do a little dance. You entertain us a lot.

You LOVE your bathtime rubber duck (and the baby duck from Grandma Carol). We try to limit it to bathtime, but you like to crawl into the bathroom, looking for them. You've even floated them in the cat's water bowl.

We laugh that you are a "boob man". You are a good eater and find comfort in nursing... sometimes, for an hour or more at a crack. (The lactation consultant said you are a smart boy, wanting to snuggle in winter; and as long as I don't have anywhere to be, I should enjoy the time I have to snuggle with you.)

Your smile is infectious. I love your giggles, too. You are happy 97% of the time... with the 3% being when you protest bedtime or when we're holding you down for a diaper change when you would rather be off exploring your world.

We sure do love you... a lot!!!

Stay sweet, little man.

Love,
Mommy

Thanks for napping

Sydney, I wanted to thank you for napping. You put up quite a fight the other day and eventually, you gave in and fell asleep. This morning, we napped together (since mommy was silly and stayed up too late playing on the computer last night.) Then, this afternoon, while we were making cookies, I noticed that you were getting tired so, I took you upstairs and put you in  your crib.

I wrapped your torso and legs tightly in two polartec baby blankets and laid you down. You immediately started to protest, but I encouraged you to lay down. You started to fuss, but I turned on your music and I left the room.

Within a minute or two, I noticed that you were quiet. I snuck to view into your room where you were sound asleep. Daddy woke you up after he had gotten home. You had a very nice afternoon nap as well.

So, I just wanted to thank you for napping. If only we would make a routine out of it, mommy might find a little time for projects and unfinished business. Sleep good, little one! I love you!

Happy 5-month Birthday Little One

Dear Sydney,
Today you turned 5 months old and tomorrow, you will hit the 22 week mark. You are getting SO BIG! You are 26.5" tall at last check and weigh at least 17 pounds.

You are an active little boy; you love to hold our fingers and walk all over the house with our assistance and a huge toothless smile on your cute little face. When we walk at night, you are especially intrigued by the nightlight in the dining room.

You like to smile; you even smile at the cats, expecting them to smile back at you.

Each day, you get a little stronger. We are practicing at sitting up on your own, but you still tip over quite easily. (Today, you bumped your head while mommy quickly tried to take a picture of you sitting up all by yourself.... Sorry about the bump, little buddy! Daddy often reminds me that you are a BOY and you will get LOTS of bumps and bruises in your lifetime.)

You continue to find your voice; some days are much noisier than others. When playing on the floor, you talk moreso when you are on your back. You also tend to TALK more when you have a toy or your fingers in your mouth.

You have mastered rolling from your back onto your stomach. You still haven't figured out how to flip back onto your back again. Every morning, we find you sleeping on your belly despite every effort to keep you on your back.  When on your belly, you are moving your legs more and more each day and are starting to learn how to pivot in a circle on the floor. You have not figured out how to crawl YET... you have learned to pull your legs up under you and balance on your knees from time to time though. One of these days... I'm sure you will surprise us!

You continue to go through drooling spells and really seem to enjoy chewing a lot. Your hands are getting more skilled and you are able to put toys into your mouth or pick them up a lot better than a few weeks ago.

We gave you a bite of applesauce last weekend, but you didn't seem all that interested. You did, however, notice right away that it was not milk. You like to sit on Daddy's lap while we eat dinner at the table and are starting to show more interest with each meal. One of these days, we will buy you a highchair so that you can join us at the table for meals. We hope to start you on solid foods within the next few weeks. We are hoping that you will have mastered eating rice cereal off of a spoon so that we can try a new solid (probably a vegetable, such as squash or sweet potato) for our Thanksgiving feast.

You are a good sleeper; a good eater; a delightfully good baby. Today, you seemed especially hungry and tired; perhaps, you are hitting your 6-month growth spurt a few weeks early?  (You woke up during the 11pm hour and the 1am hour last night, which is unlike you. You enjoyed a snack and some snuggling both times. You ate again around 5:30am and then we both went back to bed, sleeping until 9am, which felt great!) Now that you are asleep, Mommy should go to bed, too.

Happy 5-month birthday little one! We can't wait to see what you learn to do next month!

We love you so much!!!
Love,
Mommy

17 weeks of happiness

Sydney,

Today you turned 17 weeks old and we just wanted to let you know that we have had 17 weeks of happiness with you in our lives. You brighten each and every day with your smile and those bright, blue eyes. (Even the way you TALK with your eyebrows makes us giggle.) We're excited to continue, with you, on this journey we call life.

Love,
Mommy
(and Daddy)

P.S. Mommy says that your smile melts her heart. Daddy says that Mommy's heart must be ONE GIANT PUDDLE by now. Keep those big, happy smiles coming!

16 WEEKS with roll-over

Sydney, you are now 16 weeks old and weigh in at 15 pounds, 10.2 ounces. In another month, you will go to the doctor for your well-baby check-up and we anticipate that you will have grown from last time's 24" tall. (Some of your pudgy rolls, specifically in your arms, are starting to disappear so, we're guessing that your long bones are growing again.)

On your 16 week birthday, you met Grandma Carol for the first time. She couldn't wait to break you out of your carseat and hold you. She kept her hand on the back of your head and moments later announced "how strong he is at holding up his head." Then, mommy asked to borrow you for a minute where mommy let you hold her fingers as you walked across the floor of the restaurant - alternating little steps of left, right, left, right, left... (Funny, how she thought you were strong for being able to hold your head up. By the way, you're a little young for that skill already, but when you were much smaller, Aunt Sue joked about your strength that "pretty soon, you'll be walking" and she was right!)

Most of your hair, from birth, has fallen out. Grandma Olson declared that you look like Uncle Fester from the Adam's Family, but mommy wonders if you'll ever get the opportunity to see re-runs of that show to even know what we're talking about.

You LOVE to smile. You like to play Peek-a-boo, but sometimes get bored with it, forgetting we are playing, and you look away. You are getting much better at reaching for toys during tummy time. You have a good grip and are able to transfer toys from hand-to-hand. You try really hard to get the toys into your mouth, but often - your hand ends up in your mouth and the toy pokes near your eye instead. You do easily forget that you are holding onto your toys and drop them. You do not object if we try to take them away from you. You like to pet the cats... Otto seems to be the only one who will let you get close enough. In fact, he likes to rub against your toes and it makes you smile.

You LOVE your mommy and daddy. You can definitely pick us out in a crowd. You will still go to strangers without fuss. (Actually, you like most people who will smile at you.)

This past week, you finally chilled out on all of the excessive chewing and drooling has decreased slightly. Maybe those teeth will hold off a little longer... You like to suck on your fingers, with the middle/index combination being your favorite. You preferred your left-hand fingers for most of this past week, but recently discovered the same combination on your right hand.

This past week, you also discovered two new sounds: The first sound, was an ear-piercing sound where you sounded like a cross between fingernails on a chalkboard and an out-of-tune rooster. You expressed it loudly. In fact, at mommy's doctor appointment, the nurse came through the waiting room, wondering why you were crying, but then laughed when she realized that you were "just talking"... loudly, might-I-add. Your second sound this week is that of a whimpering puppy. That sound is much sweeter and soothing. (We'll say you found an outside voice and an inside voice. Either way, you are funny!)

Late last night, you finally figured out how to roll-over from your back to your tummy. Mommy caught the first one on video and was excited to tell Daddy about it. (It took you 1 minute and 37 seconds to free both arms.) Then, during Daddy's early wake-up, this morning, you showed him for yourself, over and over again... and much faster than last night.

When mommy put you back in your bed, after your 4am feeding, she was a little surprised at 9am to find you sleeping on your belly. YEP, you've mastered that new skill already, it seems.

(SIGH, our baby is growing up...)

Bald is Beautiful (scrapbook) wk2 vs wk15

Scrapbook page detail:

BORN WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR
06.10.09 wk2

THEN VS. NOW

09.10.09 wk15
BALD IS BEAUTIFUL

When you were born, you had a full head of hair. It was pretty dark in color, but in time had started to lighten up so that you looked blonder in pictures.

Whenever you got a bath, your hair would curl. You have a big cowlicky swirl in the back of your head.

The hair at the base of your skull always flips up (or flips out).

We recently noticed that you had started rubbing bald spots onto your head when you laid on the floor and played, especially on the back of your head above your ears.

Your hair continues to thin and fall out, while you look like a little old balding man. Bald is beautiful in our eyes, as are you!

• • 15 WEEK UPDATE • •

You have taken a fond liking to sucking on (or chewing) your fingers. A couple of times, you managed to get your thumb successfully into your mouth, but most often, you prefer the 2-finger combination of index and middle fingers. You are growing in skill, starting to reach for toys and being able to hold onto them for longer periods of time. You still LOVE to hold onto your shirt, especially when you are hungry.

Lately, we have been trying to get you to pet the cats so that you can all get used to each other. Surprisingly, Eddy remains the scaredy cat, but perhaps that is because you BOTH probably weigh about 15 pounds now. For weeks now, Otto has hopped onto Mommy's lap while you were eating and he almost always lets us use your tiny hands to pet him. (Sometimes, he even purrs!) He still outweighs you by 5 pounds or so.

Your eyes are still a deep shade of blue. Your smile delights us. You have found your voice and you love to "talk", especially during (or following) a diaper change. You wake up happy (like your mom) when waking on your own, but are a grumpy bear if we are the ones to wake you when you are not ready.

You love when we sing to you. Our latest song was: 10 little, 9 little, 8 little Indians... 7 little, 6 little, 5 little Indians... 4 little, 3 little, 2 little Indians... 1 little Indian boy. (You still like to sing along to the E-I-E-I-O-part of Old McDonald.)

You initially loved going for rides in the Baby Bjorn carrier or the Moby Wrap and HATED the stroller. We've tried the stroller a few times, as of late, and you seem to tolerate it now. We still bring one of the carriers along though... just in case. Yesterday, we took the stroller for a walk to the post office. (Pushing the stroller UP that crazy-big hill is A LOT HARDER than walking with one of the carriers on!!!)

You are a GREAT ADDITION to our family!

Teething... already?

Might he be TEETHING?
At three months old, we're noticing that you are now drooling and have started to CHEW ON ANYTHING you can get into your mouth... fingers, fist, toy or pacifier. Other than your own hands, getting toys into your mouth is more LUCK than skill, but you are getting better with practice each day.

Because you love to stand so much, we'll be keeping our eyes out for a sale on this Baby Einstein Activity Center once you are stronger at sitting up. We think you will LOVE this because the seat swivels 360° so that you can play with anything you want to and you will be able to look anywhere you want by rotating yourself. (You'll be able to watch the cats... Eddy and Otto... as well.) We'd better keep practicing sitting up and giving you plenty of TUMMY TIME so that you build a strong core.

Today 14lb8.2oz, tomorrow 12 weeks (PHOTOS)

Today, you weighed in at 14 pounds, 8.2 ounces!

There is NO DENYING who you belong to; you are a perfect blend of Olson & Guard.

You LOVE laying on the floor because it is a great opportunity for eye contact and for talking.

We are finding that you are best photographed in ACTION-mode because you wiggle so much.

You are getting GREAT at smiling and there is no doubt that they are sincere smiles (and not just gas).

Tomorrow, you will be 12 WEEKS OLD!

My Dear Sweet Sydney, from Grandma Carol

My Dear Sweet Sydney,

Are you not the most unbelievably cute three month old baby there is!!  Not just because I'M YOUR GRANDMA CAROL, but just because you are who you are.  Course, it helps that you also come from two very good-looking and wonderful parents, one of which is my son as well.  I can't wait to hold you and coo with you and smile with you and have that special connection of getting to know each other.  I get so excited when I read your mommy's blogs about you and see your darling pictures that I just want to hop on a plane right this minute and come to your home in Dubuque.  Believe me, I am counting the days and the hours.

Do have a wonderful week-end; enjoy all those mommy and daddy hugs and dream about seeing your Grandma Carol real soon.  I love you and have since we first found out about your existence.  In fact I was there that wonderful moment when the little gadget showed "pregnant" after your mom peed on it.  We were all very excited!!!!!!!!  Who would ever have thought that pee could be so exciting  !

Hope you and your parents are doing terrific.

With much love,  Grandma Carol

Baby, don't talk with food in your mouth

Today, you are 11 weeks old.
You weigh approximately 14 pounds and measure 24" long.
Your eyes are still a deep, dark blue. We think you are ADORABLE!

Dear Sydney,

Last night, when I was nursing you, I had to laugh.

As you were eating, I was staring down into your deep blue eyes and smiling at you. You, of course, were flirting right back with eyebrow wiggles and batting your eyelashes at me. While you ate, you started making noises. (It probably had something to do with the fact that I had been talking to you; you were probably just responding.) Without letting go of the nipple in your mouth, you were trying to "talk" and coo. I thought it was funny and took the opportunity to tell you "Don't talk with food in your mouth".

Somehow, you must have found that funny because you instantly let the nipple go and flashed Mommy one of THE BIGGEST SMILES I have ever seen.

Each day, I feel like I am THE LUCKIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD to have you and Daddy in my life. I am fortunate that we are able to have Mommy stay home with you instead of sending you to daycare because I am LOVING every minute of it!

You are getting VERY STRONG. You LOVE to stand up and to jump. You hold your head up very well during tummy time. Last night, for these pictures, you kept sitting up so high that you would tip yourself over onto your side or back. (I learned, too, that I am best to photograph you with the ACTION mode because you wiggle so much.)

You had shots yesterday and were fussy most of the day today. You were AWAKE for a good majority of the day today and just wanted to snuggle.

We walked down the crazy big hill tonight to mail a letter to your cousin Alder. Along the way, Mommy stopped because you were looking up into the trees above our head. Eventually, you fell asleep in the front pack carrier. When we came home, I was able to lay you in your crib, but you just recently noticed that you are not being held and you are crying for mommy again.

Time to go snuggle some more. I hope you feel better tomorrow.

I love you Baby Sydney!

Love,
Mommy
