What's the Favorite Part of your Day?

JANUARY 5, 2012

DADDY: Not having to wear a blue shirt today and getting to spend the WHOLE DAY with all of you.

MOMMY: Having Sydney help me in the kitchen to make a new, homemade baby food recipe for Silas... and after all that hard work, he LIKED IT!

SYDNEY: Going out to eat for salsa and chips.

Da Big Red Kicken _irt

DAD: What should Daddy wear today?
(It has been brought to Sydney's attention that Daddy does NOT have to wear a blue shirt... a work shirt... today. Sydney and Daddy dig through Daddy's shirt drawer.)

SYDNEY: Dis one!

DAD: What color is it?

SYDNEY: Dis yellow _irt!

DAD: This yellow one right here? Some people say that's a big, red chicken, you know.

SYDNEY: Yeah, da yellow one wit da big red, kicken on it.
Up, up and away! Kicken is f_ying!
(Sydney flaps his arms - looking much more like a Tyrannosaurus Rex than a bird.)

Mike lifts Sydney up into the bed to show Mommy his "flying". YES, being a parent is a good reason to get out of bed in the morning! I think we're in for A LOT of laughs today!

What's the Favorite Part of your Day?

JANUARY 4, 2012

DADDY: Sneaking, along with Sydney, into the bedroom to wake Mommy up by saying "Wakey, wakey sleepyhead!"

MOMMY: Reading a book about firefighters at naptime and then being asked (by Sydney) to help hold the hose (blanket) so that we could "kurt, kurt, kurt" the fire. (Translation: Squirt, squirt, squirt)

SYDNEY: "Nuggle wit Daddy" (Translation: Snuggle with Daddy!)

What's the Favorite Part of your Day?
JANUARY 3, 2012

DADDY: Snuggling in the recliner with Silas, just before his morning nap.
MOMMY: Finding a love note (from Mommy to Daddy) displayed in the newly organized cupboard, that Daddy has saved from long, long ago.
SYDNEY: Taking turns playing airplane and then, learning how to be a rocking chair. (Sydney sat on Mommy-chair. Then, later, Silas sat on Sydney-chair.)

Overheard from toddler... TIME OUT!

Sydney was playing with his Fisher-Price Little People Ferris Wheel (a Christmas gift from some very thoughtful friends) in the dining room while I was nursing Silas in the living room when something caught my attention.

It went something like this:

HEY, YOU! _it bat down! You in Time-Out.
(pause for few seconds)
Time Out not done. _it bat down NOW! (Pretend play voice is YELLING now.)
You be naughty now? Dat's MY seat! (A confrontation between Little People Maggie and Eddy - fighting over a seat on the ferris wheel.)
TIME OUT! (Shouting)
Time out. (Calmer now)
OK, dat's bettah. Get up now.

Then, he was on to me... as he noticed that I was watching him and smiling.

Translation: Hey, you! Sit back down! You're in time-out. Time out (is) not done. Sit back down NOW! You be(ing) naughty now? That's MY seat! Time out! Time out. OK, that's better now. Get up now.

The funny part is that he is re-playing parts of our daily life in his pretend play, but uses his PRETEND VOICE, which is slightly higher than his own. He uses that same "pretend play" voice to read stories, which is quite different than his normal speaking voice.

We haven't needed many time-outs AT ALL anymore. The 1-2-3 Magic seems to be working wonders! Most days, we're getting by with NONE!

Time-outs, as of late, are for being mean to Silas... taking toys away from Silas or for purposely pushing him down or running into him (as if knocking down pins at the bowling alley.) This is a new "thing" just this week; for the most part, he's still FANTASTIC with his baby brother 90% of the time!

He's recently started challenging time outs. He's realized that his booster seat no longer has seat belts and that he can attempt to sneak down off of his chair during time outs now. The "Hey, You! Sit back down. NOW!" and "Your time out is NOT done" might have been actual words spoken by mommy to Sydney from earlier in the day.

Funny kid.

123 Magic is a book, by Thomas Phelan, PhD, that was highly recommended by our pediatrician during the start of our Terrible Two-phase. It was also recommended by our neighbors who used it with their children.

Happy New Year 2012

2011 has come and gone. Overall, it was a FANTASTIC YEAR!

We had A LOT OF FUN as a family of three, but we've had EVEN MORE FUN as a family of four! I have often said that the first smile of the day was the best one of all. Nowadays, it isn't uncommon for me to witness two of them at the same time and I LOVE IT!!! The sound of our children giggling (often at each other) is infectious. To witness their great smiles... priceless!

Just days ago, I confirmed (to my mom) that MY LIFE is SO MUCH BETTER now than it EVER was before! I feel SO LUCKY to have met Mike and for all of the wonderful opportunities of happiness that he has brought onto me. I don't really mind having a little spit-up, snot or baby food on my shirt; I proudly earned this "mom body" and the title of MOM, as well as all that goes with it.

Every. single. day... I feel BLESSED to have two wonderful little boys... happy and healthy... and I look forward to watching them grow into wonderful young men. (And I don't doubt for a second that they will someday be WONDERFUL COOKS - just like their dad! I think it is in their genes!)

At bedtime each night, I ask Sydney "What was your favorite part of your day today?" For a while, he would answer the question without much hesitation – telling me about something that we had done that day. (For me, waiting to hear his answer was one of the favorite parts of MY DAY!) Sadly, for the past few weeks or so, he's in his "I don't know"-phase and often re-directs the question to me for an answer first. He then asks me "Whatchu kink daddy's favorite part of today is?" (That's when Mike is working and I have to come up with an answer on the fly... often recalling something from the day that he did with Sydney AND Silas together. Sydney always seems satisfied with whatever answer I give him.)

Favorite Part of Today 1.1.12
DADDY: When Sydney snuck into the master bedroom to yell BOO and say Good Morning to Daddy. Then, we (all 4) snuggled together in bed for a minute.
MOMMY: Listening to Silas, Sydney and Grandpa Lowell giggle together while they were playing keep-away with a toy and making silly noises (to entertain Silas during a diaper change). Those giggles are THE BEST!!!
SYDNEY: Reading the new Fairy Tales book with Papa Lowell.

Honestly, every day is FILLED with LOTS of favorite parts. It is hard for me to pick just one. Looking forward to another years worth of favorites (and even get an extra day's worth... with it being a Leap Year!)

Here's to a great start at the New Year!

As for New Year's Resolutions...
I'm really NOT good at keeping these, but here goes...

In the year 2012, I resolve to:
ORGANIZE – Clean out my INBOX in my email, which is over-flowing! SORT, TOSS, FILE – Tackle the box(es) of JUNK that I've been holding on to (and neglecting to get to).

FLOSS – I know, I know... it IS good for me and IS a good thing to do. I will TRY to do it more often (than I did last year.)

SUNSCREEN – I have heard a lot of talk that it is important to wear sunscreen; once the warm(er) weather hits, I will TRY to start wearing a moisturizer with SPF in it.

DRINK MORE WATER – I know this is good for me, especially being that I am (still) milk-producing.

BETTER TIME MANAGEMENT – I don't want to run late or feel rushed. I would like for us to get out the door and get to storytime at the library ON TIME and without me feeling frazzled or nagging.

READ MORE BOOKS – Not only do I vow to read a minimum of one book daily to the kids, I would like to take a little time to do some reading for myself. (I admire those people with a small pile of books on their nightstand table and make an effort to read.)

SCRAPBOOK – I love, Love, LOVE my Project Life album. It is manageable for a busy mom of 2 to be able to have SOMETHING to show for our life. Poor Silas has NO SCRAPBOOK at all. Sydney, sadly, has a birth-to-age 1 scrapbook. I would LIKE to get back into that a little more.

PHOTOS ON OUR WALLS – There are currently NO PHOTOS of Silas hanging on our walls in this house. Technically, the ONLY photos hanging in this house are our parents (from our wedding), our hand portrait, the birth-to-age 1 frame of Sydney AND the WE ARE FAMILY frame that I made for the nursery; that's it! At some point, I want to get a matching/similar frame for Silas (I have been collecting his monthly photos for when we DO have that frame) AND I would like to frame a few pics... you know, like maybe a wedding pic. (One BIG PROBLEM we have in this house is that we do not have wall space for photos. We have LOTS of doors, windows and slanted ceilings.)

Happy 8-month Birthday Little One

Silas is 8 months old!

He's recently been upgraded into SIZE 4 diapers because the 3's looked like they were digging into his hips/thighs. He's also wearing 12 month Polartec footie pajamas, which he's filling out nicely; unfortunately, the 18 month jammies are WAY TOO LONG in the leg for him. (I'm hoping that they will shrink a little in the wash.)

For clothes, he's wearing mostly 12 month sizes right now.

At 7 months old, he weighed in at 20#6 ounces. At 8 months old, he weighed in at 20#15.3 ounces, but I'm convinced that if I would have nursed him - he would have been well over the 21# mark - knowing that previous before/after nursings have indicated that he's taking at least 5-6 ounces at a feeding.

Silas has BRIGHT BLUE EYES and sandy blonde hair. The hair on the top of his head almost has a FUZZY appearance.

He has THREE TEETH: 2 bottom middle and 1 lateral incisor (left) upper.

He's a GREAT EATER! We read in a parenting magazine that you can introduce table foods... finger foods... sooner, rather than later because babies have a fantastic gag reflex and will NOT choke. So, shortly after reading that, we tried a hunk of ripe avocado and he didn't choke. We moved on to some canned vegetables... green beans... and he didn't choke. He likes the peaches and pears from fruit cocktail, but I do dice them up into smaller pieces for him. He likes to hold a slivered 1/4 of a banana and feed himself that as well. We've recently discovered that he's protesting the mesh bag feeders now that he knows he likes solids. He's liked black beans (mashed down a little to break it into two), blueberries (halved) and blackberries (quartered). Canned yams and canned asparagus spears were also a hit. Basically, the kid will eat just about anything! (He didn't seem overly interested in an Organic Mac & Cheese though; I don't blame him... as I didn't care for the taste either.) He also likes to feed himself oatmeal off of his tray.

He's recently started clapping. He'll do it if we announce "YAY!" in a cheery tone or sometimes if we say/sing "Pat-a-Cake". It makes him very proud. Sometimes, when we say BYE-BYE, he has a hitting/waving motion; we're still working on that.

He likes to play Peek-A-Boo. If we put a burp rag/cloth over his head, he will pull it off and we announce "Peek-a-Boo" as he unveils his HUGE GRIN!

He started crawling on December 5th. By the 13th, we found him on the steps. (This week, he managed to get up the bottom three triangular-shaped wedge steps, which are bigger... all on his own. He forgets though and falls down easily.) I don't really like to encourage steps... not yet!

He's also pulling himself to a stand ALL THE TIME! He's even starting to master squats already. You can tell he REALLY wants to catch up to his big brother!

Silas ADORES Sydney!!! He LOVES to watch him and smiles from ear-to-ear whenever he gets to watch his brother. They are SO STINKING CUTE TOGETHER!

Silas is a thumb-sucker... his right thumb exclusively. He has a chapped chin because of it. (I just started putting Lanolin for chapped, dry nipples on his chin and it seems to be working VERY WELL!)

He likes to flirt with the cute baby in the mirror. He has an incredibly happy disposition!

He goes down for a nap - tired, but awake. Same with bedtime most nights. He is MUCH EASIER than Sydney ever was. When he is tired, he will whimper/cry and lay his head down on the floor. (Sydney NEVER did that!) Silas is a VERY EASY BABY!

He still wakes (most nights) to eat - at least once in the night. He's strictly business and goes right back to sleep so, I can't complain too much. Lately, he's been making it from 8pm-4/5am and then after a quick snack goes back to bed until 7-8am. He's pretty content; sometimes, we find him just laying in his bed - on his back - with his thumb in his mouth, just looking around. As soon as he sees us, he SMILES and scurries to a stand.

He's starting to cruise along furniture. He also falls down a lot, but that is because he pulls himself to a stand a lot. He's showing more interest in wanting to walk - that's for sure! (Sydney is excited for when they will be able to run and chase each other. For now, they make due with crawling and it is pretty cute to watch.) He also runs into the legs of the table and chairs because he doesn't know to look FORWARD when he crawls; it is kind of funny to see him get stuck. (He has started to figure out how to navigate reasonably well though... as we're finding that he's managing to squeeze into tighter spaces (i.e. around the edge of the playpen to get to the stairs). He's got LOTS of drive and determination, it seems! He's SO PROUD!

He can swipe the glasses off of your face in .2 seconds. He's SO QUICK and you can tell that he thinks it is funny. He also has a "thing" for grabbing and pulling on ears, as if they are a handle. To him, I suppose, they ARE! He's often got sharp fingernails (since it is near-impossible to get the two boys napping at the same time so that I can trim them in daylight hours.)

Silas LOVES to check under the dining room table for stuff to eat. Well, he likes to eat anything he finds. He is a very oral baby! He tends to like to chew on paper, too. YUCK! He chews on most toys as well.

Silas and Otto (our shy cat) are buddies. Otto hops up while we're nursing. Silas smiles when he feels the cat's fur or when he hears him purring. Otto will also (sometimes) let Silas pet him when he's crawling around on the floor; Otto didn't ever do that once Sydney was mobile.

He has been a FANTASTIC ADDITION to our family! I can't imagine our lives without him. It feels like he's always been here; our transition from one-to-two went flawlessly! I'm starting to think that he IS: THE HAPPIEST KID EVER!
• • • • • • • • • • • •
On 1.5.12, he ate his first MEAT (fish)! Sydney and I made a recipe out of our Baby/Toddler Cookbook. It had cod, potatoes, carrots, juice from one orange, a little cheddar cheese and a dollop of butter - cooked and blended. And the verdict: HE LIKED IT! (I also gave him some couscous, which I thought would be something that he could feed himself. It sounded like a good idea at the time and he really seemed to enjoy it, but it was A HUGE MESS to clean up!)

This same day, he also swiped the ground turkey meat sloppy joe sample right out of Sydney's hand while they rode side-by-side in the shopping cart at Sam's Club. He had a little on his nose, chin and hand so, I think he DID get a taste of it.
